Year 12s embrace real-world work experience
NEARLY half of Year 12 students are focused on gaining real-world experience to prepare for their future careers according to a report from the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).
The nation’s largest survey of school leavers – with almost 18,000 participants – revealed that 45.1 per cent of students want work experience and internship opportunities while they study, a significant 6.8 per cent increase since 2021.
This career-focused mindset is reshaping how students choose their tertiary education paths. Work experience and industry partnerships now rank among the top three priorities for students when selecting a course.
Fortunately, opportunities for internships and work-integrated learning are built into many degrees. Of the more than 2,500 undergraduate courses offered by UAC’s 31 participating institutions, nearly 48 per cent include practical learning opportunities as part of their curriculum.
These range from rural placements for agricultural students, industrial experience for engineering students to internships at animation studios and overseas archaeological fieldwork trips.
Kim Paino, UAC Chief Strategy and Engagement Officer said, ‘This report highlights the growing importance students place on being career ready. They don’t just want a degree – they want to graduate with the skills and confidence to enter the workforce. There is a clear expectation from students that work-integrated learning will become further embedded in all university programs.’
The message is clear: Year 12s are not just dreaming about their futures – they’re preparing to build them.
