Who can apply

Who can apply for uni through UAC

UAC is here to help you apply for undergraduate and postgraduate study at more than 30 Australian universities and colleges.

You can apply through UAC if you are:

  • an Australian Year 12 student finishing an HSC or equivalent in Australia; this includes students studying the International Baccalaureate (IB) in Australia
  • a New Zealand student finishing the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3
  • a recent school leaver from the last few years with an ATAR or equivalent; your ATAR is still valid for most courses although unis consider your application as a non-school leaver, and you'll be competing against other non-school leaver applicants for an offer
  • a non-school leaver (often called mature-age or adult learner) applicant and haven’t studied for a while; UAC and unis look at your school results, your previous study, work experience or results from things like the Skills for Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
  • an international student who is completing this year or completed last year an Australian Year 12 qualification, the IB, or the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3; if you have other international qualifications, you’ll usually need to apply directly to the university
  • a student using a pathway course or credit transfer to gain entry to a course
  • a postgraduate applicant with a relevant undergraduate degree, diploma or even another postgraduate course; you may also have professional work experience to help support your application.

Visa and citizenship requirements

You can apply for undergraduate and postgraduate (coursework) study through UAC if you are:

  • an Australian or New Zealand citizen
  • a permanent resident of Australia
  • the holder of an Australian permanent resident humanitarian visa.

You can also apply for undergraduate study through UAC if you're an international student who has completed/is undertaking one of the following qualifications in 2024 or 2025:

  • an Australian Year 12 in or outside Australia
  • an International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • a New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3.

Everyone else needs to apply directly to the uni.

Applying directly to the uni

Some of our participating institutions also take direct applications for their undergraduate courses. This means you can submit a UAC application and a direct application to the institution.

However, if you do complete both a UAC application and a direct application, we highly recommend that you don’t duplicate your course preferences. Make the most of both applications and choose different preferences in each. That way, you can potentially receive offers to different courses.

Check with the uni as to how and when it will make its direct offers.

Institutions with direct applications only: The undergraduate course search includes courses for which you must apply directly to the institution. Read a profile of each institution.
