Year 12s prioritise skills and employment in uncertain times
AUSTRALIA’s Year 12 students are increasingly focused on building adaptable skills and career flexibility as they navigate an uncertain economic landscape, according to the country’s largest annual survey of school leavers, released by the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC).
UAC’s Student Lifestyle and Learning Report 2026 – drawing on responses from 20,813 students across every state and territory – reveals a generation that is pragmatic, values-driven and seeking to secure their future through further education.
Despite rising cost-of-living pressures and heavy workloads, students remain strongly committed to higher education, with university continuing to be seen as a critical pathway to opportunity:
- 76% cite better job or career opportunities as a key benefit
- 73% want a qualification that gives them flexibility and options
- 71% are focused on building practical skills and knowledge they can apply in the real world.
Significantly, the importance of learning new skills has surged from 22 per cent in 2024 to 29 per cent in 2026 – making it the fastest-growing priority for students over the past three years.
UAC Chief Strategy and Engagement Officer, Kim Paino, said the findings reflect a cohort responding thoughtfully to workforce disruption and economic uncertainty.
‘Today's Year 12 students understand that a degree isn't just about a job title – it's about building the adaptive capacity to navigate change throughout their careers.
‘They're looking for qualifications that give them options, not lock them into narrow pathways. This shift toward skills, flexibility and real-world application shows a noteworthy maturity and foresight in the face of genuine economic and technological disruption.’
The findings align closely with the Productivity Commission's recent Building a Skilled and Adaptable Workforce report, which identified workforce capability as a critical driver of future national prosperity.
The Student Lifestyle and Learning Report 2026 provides a comprehensive snapshot of Australia's Year 12 cohort, tracking trends in study motivations, mental health, career aspirations and learning preferences.
