The Master of Teaching (Secondary) gives you practical tools to provide inspiration and direction to high-school students. Offering a mix of on-campus theory and school-based placements, this program produces teachers with strong academic knowledge and skills, excellence in professional practice, commitment to equity and social justice, and dedication to personal and professional growth. The dual qualification of an undergraduate degree and postgraduate teaching qualification gives you great career flexibility.

Graduates can apply for roles as a secondary school teacher with government and non-government schools in Australia and most other countries. Applicants can also pursue career interests in the field of their undergraduate degree, such as education policy, curriculum development and education administration, or generalist positions using the teamwork and leadership, communication and organisation skills highly valued by employers.

Flexible study options are offered where applicants may be eligible for an accelerated study mode for early completion.

This degree is accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority. Graduates also meet the Australian Professional Standards for Graduate Teachers.

Admission criteria

  • Undergraduate degree in English, Mathematics, Studies of Society, Geography, Humanities, Business, Law, Health Sciences, Music, Performing Arts, Languages, Aboriginal Studies with a minimum GPA of 4 on a 7-point scale.
  • The completed subjects in the undergraduate degree must match with the secondary subject content requirements of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) for the subject(s) the applicant is intending to teach.

Accelerated progression

The program can be completed in 1.5 years of full-time study with accelerated progression by students who gain a GPA of 5 for their first four core subjects of study in the Master of Teaching (Secondary).

Suitability for teaching

Students are required to demonstrate suitability for the teaching profession by completing the Literacy and Numeracy Test.
