About
Being able to communicate with others is a fundamental human pursuit. Speech and hearing professionals have the privilege of bringing that gift to the community – whether that be through helping someone hear for the first time, assisting a stroke patient to speak again or investigating how children acquire language.
The Bachelor of Speech and Hearing Sciences will prepare you for postgraduate study towards a career in a number of professions, including clinical work or research in audiology and speech and language pathology, forensic speech science, the development of associated speech and hearing technologies, or teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).
Areas of study
Commonalities and differences between the world’s languages; hearing and its disorders; how children and adults learn a second or other language; how language develops in children; how language is represented in the brain; how spoken language is produced, perceived and understood; speech and language disorders; the relationship between language and society.

Forensic speech scientist; health worker; speech, hearing or language researcher. After further study: audiologist, speech pathologist, TESOL practitioner.
Professional recognition
If you wish to qualify for clinical practice in either audiology or speech and language pathology, you’ll need to undertake postgraduate study in order to gain the appropriate professional qualification. Macquarie offers master degrees in clinical audiology and speech and language pathology. If you wish to become accredited as a TESOL practitioner, you’ll need to complete postgraduate study in this field.
