Designed for aspiring performers ready to make an impact, the Diploma of Music (Contemporary Performance) offers a fast-tracked, practical introduction to the music industry. In just 8 months of full-time study, you’ll sharpen your technical skills, explore your artistic identity, and gain real-world performance experience across a range of contemporary genres.
From day one, you’ll rehearse and perform in industry-standard spaces equipped with top-tier gear—developing the confidence and stagecraft needed for a professional career. You’ll also collaborate with peers across songwriting, production and business, building a network that mirrors the realities of today’s music scene.
Whether you’re planning to launch your music career or pathway into the Bachelor of Music, this course provides a strong foundation for both.
Core musicianship, ear training, ensemble performance, instrumental technique (guitar, bass, drums, keys, voice), introduction to songwriting, and use of industry-standard music software and production tools, music business fundamentals, music theory, stagecraft.
Emerging recording artist, live performer, session musician, band member, artist manager (self-managed), music tutor, event support roles, or continue into further study such as the Bachelor of Music.
Throughout the course, students gain hands-on performance experience at JMC’s on-campus venues and curated live events. You’ll also have the opportunity to collaborate with peers across JMC’s creative disciplines, reflecting real-world industry collaboration.

Audition: All applicants must showcase their talents at an audition to demonstrate their style and musicianship. Two contrasting pieces of music of your own choice must be performed – either with a live accompanist or backing track – and should not exceed 10 minutes in total. All students will receive feedback on their performance on the day.
Completion of an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent). No ATAR required. Minimum age 17.
Interview: Once we've received your application, we'll give you a call and organise for you to come in for a consultation with one of our student recruitment advisers. During this appointment they'll be able to confirm your application details, assess the best course study options for you.
