About

Ranked in the world’s Top 200 for Psychology (QS World University Rankings), Western can give you the professional skills you need to make a real difference in the field of psychology.

If you’re a fourth-year Psychology graduate, the Master of Professional Psychology gives you a fifth year of training under the 'five plus one' model, as recommended by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA).

You’ll be trained in the key areas of ethics, psychological assessment and therapeutic interventions and emerge with an APAC-accredited qualification and 50 per cent of the requirements towards registration as a general psychologist. To obtain full registration, you will need to organise additional supervised placement hours.

To meet the need for forensically oriented psychologists in the field, this degree also addresses psychological practice within the forensic psychology domain.

Admission criteria

Applicants will be subject to competitive selection based on academic merit, two referee reports and performance at a selection interview to determine capability for practitioner competency. Selection interviews are held between October and December each year.

Applicants must:

  • have successfully completed an Australian Psychology Accreditation Council accredited four-year undergraduate psychology degree within the last 10 years, with an indicative academic achievement, based on entry in previous year, of a GPA of 5.0 or higher (counting Year 2 to 3 as 50% and Year 4 as 50%)
  • arrange for two referees’ reports (one academic and one professional) to be completed and submitted online via The Australian Psychology Post-Graduate Program Reference Request System. This system is in place across all Australian universities. You will need an active subscription that allows you to access the service during the 2023 intake (from 1 August 2023 to 31 July 2024). The fee is $25 and can be paid through the ‘My Account’ section in the payment tab. An online Reference Request System Guide is available.
  • attend an interview, by invitation, with the School of Psychology.

International qualifications must also be assessed by the Australian Psychology Society (APS) before applying for entry into the Master of Professional Psychology. The APS must deem the qualification to be equivalent to an Australian four year sequence in psychology (including an honours equivalent research thesis component) to be considered.

Special requirements and policies apply to this program. Further information can be found on the Western Sydney University website. No deferrals will be accepted for this program.
