About

The Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Teaching (Birth to 5) engages students with fundamental education concepts from a comprehensive Christian world view. The course content and assessment address the nature of reality, origin, methods, and limits of human reasoning and intelligence, and beliefs about values underpinning education. The fusion of academic, practical and Christian perspectives will contribute to the preparation of well-rounded early childhood education professionals.

The main intended outcome is to produce life-ready graduates equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in their future careers. In addition, due to the Christian values and beliefs that underpin the course, an integral intended outcome is that graduates should show and share caring, empathy and ways of educating creatively, consistent with Excelsia’s graduate attributes.

The Graduate Diploma of Early Childhood Teaching (Birth to 5) has been designed to meet the recommended workload and outcome descriptors for AQF Level 8 (graduate diploma). The design is also informed by ACECQA requirements for early childhood teachers with a view to preparing teachers with high-quality conceptual and practical skills to function effectively in early childhood centres and meet national and local requirements and standards. The course is 48 credit points consisting of 8 units. All units in the course are core and must be completed to meet all course requirements.

Areas of study include child growth, early childhood and care, Indigenous studies, language and literacy, learning and development, science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics in early childhood.

Upon completion of this course career opportunities could include Early Childhood (Pre-Primary School) Teacher, assessed per AITSL standards.

Students undertake two six-week (30-day) placements of professional experience in an early childhood service. The first professional practice unit is in Semester 1 and focuses on children from birth to two years old (infants and/or toddlers). The Semester 2 placement focuses on children aged three to five years old (pre-schoolers).
