About

Forests, the most biodiverse terrestrial ecosystems, are central to life on earth and planetary and human health. Halting deforestation and forest degradation, restoring forests in landscapes degraded by unsustainable use, and expanding the role of forests in climate change mitigation and adaptation, are global goals with diverse local implementation opportunities and challenges.

Traditional Owners now manage a third of Australia’s forests, mostly for conservation and environmental services; state agencies manage another third. Plantation forests grow most of our wood. Farm forests improve agricultural productivity and sustainability. Urban forests make cities more liveable and improve their residents’ wellbeing. Wood from sustainably managed forests is often described as ‘the ultimate renewable’, and is now the basis of advanced engineered materials and buildings. Around the world, forests in their many forms, and how we conserve and manage them sustainably for their myriad services and products, are being re-imagined.   

Capitalising on these opportunities and addressing the associated challenges is both exciting and demanding. It requires innovative, interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving, drawing from a wide range of disciplinary and specialist knowledge. By completing courses across a broad range of knowledge bases and applied to forest science and management, you will develop the skills to integrate and adapt knowledge to design novel solutions to complex problems. 

ANU’s Graduate Certificate of Forests provides you with a flexible education experience and acts as an entry point for more advanced coursework degree programs. In addition, the program provides you with a range of professional development opportunities that you can immediately utilise in your workplace. 

Admission criteria

Applicants must meet one of the following criteria:

• Bachelor degree or international equivalent with GPA of 4/7, or
• Graduate Diploma or international equivalent with a GPA of 4/7, or
• Graduate Certificate or international equivalent with a GPA of 4/7, or
• 24 units of completed postgraduate courses with a GPA of 4/7, or
• Graduate Records Examination (GRE) General test, completed no more than 5 years before the time of application, with a minimum score of 155 for Verbal Reasoning, 155 for Quantitative Reasoning and 4.0 in Analytical Writing and a minimum of 3 years full-time equivalent work experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a field related to the program; or
• A minimum 5 years full-time equivalent work experience at ANZSCO Skill Level 1 in a field related to the program.

GPA calculation

ANU uses a 7-point grade point average (GPA) scale. All qualifications submitted for admission at ANU will be converted to this common scale, which will determine if an applicant meets our published admission requirements. Find out how a 7-point GPA is calculated for Australian universities.

Unless otherwise indicated, where an applicant has more than one completed tertiary qualification, ANU will calculate the GPA for each qualification separately. ANU will base assessment on the best GPA of all completed tertiary qualifications that are eligible to be considered.

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs)

Commonwealth Supported Places (CSPs) for this program are limited, competitive and awarded on academic merit. There is no application process for a CSP. All students commencing in Semester 2 2022 (including Winter and Spring sessions) will be ranked according to the GPA of the qualification used as the basis of admission.
