About

Starting this degree mid-year in July will extend the overall program duration by one semester.

Radiation therapy uses advanced technology to target and destroy cancer cells. The University of Newcastle, and its world-first Radiation Therapy teaching laboratories is a leading radiation therapy trainer with graduates being sought after worldwide. As a Radiation Therapist, you can make a real difference in the lives of cancer patients and their families through exceptional patient care involving the development and delivery of highly sophisticated cancer treatment to manage or cure their disease. Studying a Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Honours) (Radiation Therapy) will set you on a path to make your mark on the world.

This degree requires students to participate in clinical placements in NSW Health facilities. Clinical placement provides you with unique hands-on experience, preparing you for a successful transition into a career in the field of Radiation Therapy.

Students should be aware that they may be required to undertake clinical placement and/or classes outside normal semester dates. Travel, accommodation, and related expenses for professional placements are the responsibility of students.

Professional recognition

Our radiation therapy graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia under the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency.

Practical experience

Students complete 40+ weeks of clinical placement in a variety of public and private settings in metropolitan, regional and rural settings across Australia.

Students are required to complete a portion of their placement in rural communities. This opportunity will give students valuable experiences not available in major cities or urban centres.

Travel, accommodation, and related expenses for professional placements are the responsibility of students. However, scholarships are available to assist attendance in rural areas throughout the program.

You will also have access to our world-class radiation therapy teaching spaces, which is the first of its kind in Australia. The Global Centre for Research and Training in Radiation Oncology gives students access to the latest cancer treatment technology with, a specially designed bunker and dedicated Linear Accelerator space, the Simulation Laboratory, a Virtual Reality Training (VERT) teaching space with 3-Dimensional Technology, and a PC laboratory with the latest Treatment Planning Software, and CT Scanner.

Students enrolling in this degree are required to obtain a WorkCover-approved Provide First Aid Certificate during Semester one.

Honours

University of Newcastle medical radiation science students graduate with Honours, giving you a distinct advantage when seeking employment. As part of the honours component, you can choose from two study pathways.

Essential requirements for admission

This degree and future professional practice is both mentally and physically demanding. Students may be required to practise hands-on examinations and simulated treatments/procedures with other students in laboratory classes. Applicants with recent secondary education

Assumed knowledge: Any 2 units of English plus Mathematics Advanced or Physics.
