With our Bachelor of Media and Communication, you'll learn how to tell stories across any medium.

At La Trobe, you'll specialise with one major in journalism, sports media, media industries, creative and professional writing, or marketing – then explore your interests with an optional second major, minors and electives from across the university.

Gain real-world experience by taking on an industry placement, studying overseas through international exchange or showcasing your work alongside other emerging professionals as part of La Trobe's own Upstart and Upstart Live.  

Our industry-grade newsroom boasts a three-camera television studio, professional radio broadcast spaces, a dedicated audio recording studio and digital editing suites..

Career opportunities

Work in a range of industries including news and media, sports, health or politics. Possible roles include: social media manager, journalist, videographer, media and communications manager.

Practical experience

During this course, you will have the opportunity to participate in a Work Based Learning (WBL) placement experience, designed to allow you to extend your formal academic learning beyond the classroom. The WBL experience will provide the opportunity to bring your learning from the university into a work environment and test out your knowledge in a professional real-world environment.

One of English Standard, English Advanced (Band 2), English as an Additional Language or Dialect (Band 3).

Admission criteria

Applicants with recent secondary education

Subject adjustments: Applicants who successfully complete one of the following HSC or equivalent Year 12 subjects will have their selection rank increased by one point per study:

  • Band 3 in Ancient History, Business Studies, Economics, Financial Services, Geography, Legal Studies, Modern History, Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE), Physics, Society and Culture, Studies in Religion II
  • Band 2 in any language other than English.

Selection ranks can be increased by a maximum of five points.

Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.
