About

One of the first communication courses to focus on social media and digital technologies, the Digital and Social Media major at UTS will ensure that you become a capable practitioner of the modern formats of digital communication. This rapidly evolving industry requires workers to be technologically literate, culturally aware, and innovative, with an ability to analyse and develop solutions to problems using digital media technologies.

In the course, you will be introduced to key debates around the role of social media as a communication tool, and its prevalence in day-to-day affairs. You will also develop transferable, practical skills in digital media production, user experience (UX) and user interface design (UI), data analysis, platform and audience analysis, and code literacy.

Through case study analysis and applied learning, this course offers a comprehensive understanding of digital and social media as both a social phenomenon and future career pathway. Focused on practical exercises, you will develop digital campaigns, data visualisations, and mobile app prototypes; and understand the intricacies of social media communication through analysing social media platforms and activist and social movements. Indigenous cultural competency is embedded throughout the course, ensuring our graduates understand best practice when engaging with and for Indigenous and culturally diverse people and communities. A growth area, careers in digital and social media are far-reaching and present in many industries, from small businesses to large corporations, and in government and not-for-profit sectors, in both freelance and in-house digital marketing departments. By the end of the degree, you will have built a sizeable portfolio of work to show to employers and assist your entry into a large job market.

To increase your career flexibility, you can add a second major from five of the other majors offered in the Bachelor of Communication, and build further skills and portfolios that equip you for a range of work options in media and communication. Many assignments are practice-based and all are relevant to understanding and working with digital and social media for industry. Students have the opportunity to undertake a professional internship.

Honours

Bachelor of Communication (Honours) is offered as a separate degree, taken over one year full-time. Application for admission is made direct to UTS. It is open to outstanding graduates from any university, provided they satisfy the selection criteria. It can lead to higher-level research degrees, and gives graduates an edge in a range of professional and creative areas. The UTS School of Communication hosts an honours information session in September.

Exchange and study abroad

Students who wish to study overseas during their course can undertake a UTS exchange or study abroad placement that counts towards their degree, any time after their first year.

Course completion
