About

Huge increases in the volume of data have led to a growing demand for professionals who can design, organise, manage and manipulate databases. These professionals also need the ability to analyse and extract useful and practical insights and then communicate these findings to a range of audiences.

Designed for students who wish to develop strong and rigorous mathematical, statistical and computing skills, the degree involves the development of good communication and consulting skills, providing a holistic education.

You will study a range of subjects in big data mining and management, database performance, sample survey and experimental designs, linear algebra, and linear models, data analytics and visualisation. The degree includes industry guest lectures and industry-inspired projects that involve a series of related analyses.

Additionally, students will complete a Professional Practice subject involving an industry relevant project to develop your skills in identifying problems, selecting relevant techniques, communicating effectively and managing projects. 

There are opportunities for scholarships from corporate partners, plus summer scholarships and undergraduate research projects with academic staff. You will have access to degrees offered by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) and inter-university courses via our Access Grid Room.

All applicants must have studied the equivalent of Mathematics Advanced or higher at year 12 level.

Admission criteria

Applicants with recent secondary education

Assumed knowledge: Any 2 units of English.

Recommended studies: Mathematics Extension 1.
