Bachelor of Psychological Science/Bachelor of Social Science

Understand human behaviour; how people think, feel, act and change and study how and why we live the way we do when you study psychological science and social science at UOW. You will scientifically study the human mind and its functions as you understand the complex and changing needs of societies in the face of technological, economic and social changes that affect the smallest of communities to the largest of nations. Enhancing your educational, academic and professional qualifications, double degrees allow you to gain two degrees at once, minimising both the time commitment and cost of your studies.

On completion, you will be able to address these challenges and more as you help improve wellbeing and psychological health in order to positively transform the lives of individuals, families, communities and their environments.

You'll benefit by learning from recognised and passionate leaders in their fields in this flexible yet rigorous degree. You will learn core fundamental knowledge across practical and theoretical subjects in the first year of your degree before deciding which Social Science major/minor disciplines to focus on from the second year. You will learn how the science and practice of psychology is influenced by social, historical, professional and cultural contexts. Throughout this double degree, you will gain hands-on experience and make meaningful professional connections through in-depth research opportunities, work integrated learning subjects and optional internships. You will gain a partial qualification for provisional registration as a Psychologist with the Psychology Board of Australia and be provided a route to Postgraduate coursework or research degrees in Psychology when you complete your Bachelor of Psychological Science.

Areas of study

Bachelor of Psychological Science: Biological psychology and learning, cognitions and perception, development and social psychology, personality, psychology of abnormality. Bachelor of Social Science: Criminology, human geography, human services, occupational health and safety, sociology. Additional electives and minors from the social science, arts and science disciplines are also available to complement your studies.

Career opportunities

Drug and alcohol counselling, health education, human resource management, industrial relations, market and social research, human services worker (such as in justice, community services, aged care, welfare, family support services, local, state or federal government, not-for-profit advocacy and support organisations), project worker, administrative coordinator or research assistant in community services, research or policy development, international development, postgraduate study including Master of Teaching (Primary).

Professional recognition

Accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council. Students must complete an additional honours year to meet the academic requirements for eligibility for provisional registration as a psychologist. Further postgraduate study and training is required for full accreditation.

Honours

Bachelor of Psychological Science: Available as an additional year of study to meritorious students. Entry is competitive. Bachelor of Social Science: Available as an additional year of study to meritorious students.
