Unlock your career opportunities with a thorough grounding in law and a thorough understanding of advocacy and storytelling when you study journalism and law at UOW. You can tailor a degree specifically to your interests in the world of journalism and media as you explore legal frameworks and develop advanced research and communication skills. Learn to effectively research and communicate stories as you analyse, appreciate, and understand the diversity of the global community.

How do you operate professionally in a changing media landscape? What are the legal implications of holding leaders to account?On completion of this double degree, you will be able to answer these questions and more as you enter a career spanning media law, intellectual property law, and ethics; and strong production skills in print, online and broadcast journalism.

You'll be immersed in practical, hands-on learning as part of the UOWTV Multimedia student newsroom, and produce coverage for its website, YouTube channel and social media platforms. You will have real deadlines and will engage with the community and industry as you explore and innovate within journalism’s changing environment, including podcasting, data journalism, and immersive video. You will also gain practical experience during a legal internship where you will gain highly valued industry experience.

Bachelor of Laws: Business and financial law, commercial law, constitutional law, contracts, criminal law, environmental law, family law, human rights, intellectual property, international law, jurisprudence, legal ethics, legal skills, litigation and practice skills/internships, property law, taxation, torts. Bachelor of Journalism: Broadcast journalism, photojournalism, print journalism, web-based journalism.

Career opportunities

Bachelor of Laws: Solicitor, barrister, policy officer in government departments, in- house lawyer in private companies and community legal centres, accounting, banking and finance, business and management, education, government administration, media and communications. Bachelor of Journalism: Print/television/radio/photo/online journalist, producer, researcher, communication specialist, editor, writer, copywriter, media adviser, careers in public relations and advertising.

Professional recognition

Bachelor of Laws: Eligible for admission as a lawyer in Australia, subject to completing state-approved Practical Legal Training (PLT). Further details for NSW students can be found at the Legal Profession Admission Board website.

Practical experience

Bachelor of Laws: Legal internship provides 20 working days of professional experience. Bachelor of Journalism: Production of website, YouTube channel and social media platform content for the UOWTV Multimedia student newsroom, optional internships, portfolio of work.

Honours

Bachelor of Laws: Bachelor of Laws (Honours) is awarded on the basis of excellent performance throughout the course, as well as in a Legal Research Methodology subject and a Legal Research Thesis. Bachelor of Laws (Honours by Research) is also available as an additional year to meritorious graduate students.

Assumed knowledge: Any 2 units of English.
