^ The indicative annual tuition fee is based on a full-time student enrolment load of 48 credit points per year, or 1.0 Equivalent Full-Time Student Load (1.0 EFTSL). Tuition fees are reviewed annually and may increase each year. Tuition fees are calculated on a student’s exact enrolment. UNSW students enrolled in most courses have some flexibility in the subjects they choose. At times these subjects will be from outside their own faculty. For example, a Commerce student may choose elective subjects from a range of other faculties; a student in a combined Law degree with Engineering or Science will choose subjects from Science and Engineering and subjects from Law. These choices may result in a higher or lower total fee for the year.
About
Food scientists study the properties of food and ingredients to ensure their safe use and consumption. This degree will provide you with a solid background in mathematics, natural science and applied science to equip you for a career in a variety of food-related professions. You’ll work on food product design, professional food practice, food systems management and more, in addition to conducting research for a thesis.

Various roles across food engineering, food microbiology, food chemistry and biochemistry, food allergy and food safety, nutrition, food product development, sensory analysis, and food packaging. A number of our graduates have moved onto senior leadership and management positions in industry.
Professional recognition
The UNSW Food Science degree is the only Australian Food Science program to be recognised by the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT), USA.
Graduates of the UNSW Food Science degree will be eligible to apply for graduate membership with the Australian Institute of Food Science and Technology and the Nutrition Society of Australia. The Food Science degree provides an appropriate background for a postgraduate qualification in nutrition and dietetics.
Honours
Honours Class 1 or 2 will be awarded on the basis of superior performance throughout the course.

Assumed knowledge: Chemistry, any 2 units of mathematics.
Portfolio Entry: Early Conditional Offer Scheme: This degree is eligible for the Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offer Scheme. You can submit a portfolio to demonstrate your passion for your chosen degree and receive an early conditional offer with an adjusted ATAR entry requirement. Students are required to submit a video and personal statement conveying their motivation and passion towards studying Engineering, Computer Science or Food Science.
