^ The indicative annual tuition fee is based on a full-time student enrolment load of 48 credit points per year, or 1.0 Equivalent Full-Time Student Load (1.0 EFTSL). Tuition fees are reviewed annually and may increase each year. Tuition fees are calculated on a student’s exact enrolment. UNSW students enrolled in most courses have some flexibility in the subjects they choose. At times these subjects will be from outside their own faculty. For example, a Commerce student may choose elective subjects from a range of other faculties; a student in a combined Law degree with Engineering or Science will choose subjects from Science and Engineering and subjects from Law. These choices may result in a higher or lower total fee for the year.

About

Mechanical engineering: Any design you could dream of can be brought to reality by a mechanical engineer. Mechanical engineers apply scientific and engineering knowledge to develop, manufacture and operate machines and tools, which can then be used to develop other products. This degree teaches you how to design and manage the construction, operation and maintenance of machines used in many industries.

Mechanical and manufacturing engineering: Mechanical and manufacturing engineering turns energy into power and motion through the design of smart mechanical systems. . You’ll learn how to research, design, build, test, maintain and improve almost everything, from power plants and renewable energy systems to robots and cars.

Aerospace engineering: Immerse yourself in the science and practice of air and space flight with this exciting degree. You’ll cover design, development, testing and production of aerospace vehicles, maintenance and operation of aircraft, and aerospace research. In your final year you’ll execute a team project, applying your skills in aircraft design to meet a defined mission specification.

Double degrees: Aerospace, Mechanical, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering can be combined with 425560 Bachelor of Fine Arts, 425850 Bachelor of Arts, 425850 Bachelor of Science, 425850 Bachelor of Science (Computer Science), 425900 Bachelor of Commerce, 426000 Bachelor of Laws, or 429330 Bachelor of Science (Advanced Mathematics) (Hons), 429360 Bachelor of Advanced Science (Hons), or 425950 M Biomedical Engineering.

Areas of study

Aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, mechanical and manufacturing engineering. Students specialise in each discipline after two years of engineering fundamentals: engineering design, fluid mechanics, mechanics, physical sciences, solid mechanics, thermodynamics.

Career opportunities

Mechanical engineer working in power generation, transport, construction, mining, manufacturing, insurance and appliances; manufacturing engineer automotive, defence, aerospace, transport, power generation, insurance, railway systems and management consultancy; aerospace engineer working in space industry, national security, transportation, airlines, maritime construction and consulting.

Honours

Honours Class 1 or 2 will be awarded on the basis of superior performance throughout the course.

Professional recognition

Students can apply for membership of the relevant professional engineering or science institutions within Australia and affiliated overseas bodies, including Engineers Australia. International recognition offers graduates the opportunity to travel and work overseas.

Industrial experience: Students complete at least 60 working days of approved industrial experience as part of all accredited Engineering programs.

Applicants with recent secondary education

Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Extension 1, Physics.

Portfolio Entry: Early Conditional Offer Scheme: This degree is eligible for the Portfolio Entry Early Conditional Offer Scheme. You can submit a portfolio to demonstrate your passion for your chosen degree and receive an early conditional offer with an adjusted ATAR entry requirement. Students are required to submit a video and personal statement conveying their motivation and passion towards studying Engineering, Computer Science or Food Science.
