About

Psychologists seek to understand how the mind works and why people behave the way they do. They focus on the complexities of human behaviour – how development occurs, how personality forms, and how factors like society and culture affect behaviour – and seek to provide strategies that can help people lead happier, healthier and more productive lives.

The prestigious Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) sets you on the path for a career in specialist fields such as clinical psychology, clinical neuropsychology, organisational psychology or professional psychology. It involves three years of accredited undergraduate study followed by an honours year in which you complete a research thesis and advanced coursework units. This enables you to apply for entry to a professional master degree focused on your career of choice. A further two years of postgraduate training or supervised experience is required for registration as a psychologist.

From 2024, entry to the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) is only available after successful completion of the Bachelor of Psychology, and after meeting the required WAM and additional criteria. Successfully completing the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) is required for entry into a professional master degree. Following postgraduate study, a further two years of postgraduate training or supervised experience is required for registration as a psychologist.

Areas of study

Biopsychology and learning, cognition and perception, counselling and psychological wellbeing, emotion, health psychology, intercultural and Indigenous psychology, motivation, neuroscience, organisational psychology, personality and principles of psychological assessment, psychopathology, research design and statistics, social and developmental psychology.

Career opportunities

Data analyst, educator and trainer of adults, health and community program manager, health researcher, human resources consultant, market analyst, project manager, report writer, research assistant, social program coordinator or policymaker. After further study: psychologist.

Professional recognition

This degree is accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and enables you to pursue further study in the profession of psychology or a higher research degree. Macquarie University offers four postgraduate study options for registration as a psychologist in New South Wales:

  • two-year postgraduate master degrees:
    – Master of Clinical Psychology
    – Master of Clinical Neuropsychology
    – Master of Organisational Psychology.
  • one-year postgraduate master degree followed by one year of supervised internship prior to registration independent from the university:
    – Master of Professional Psychology.

Honours

The fourth-year honours program usually commences at the beginning of Session 1 and is two sessions (one year) in duration.

Admission to the fourth-year honours program will require completion of at least 240 credit points, as well as a weighted average mark (WAM) of 70 across all psychology units (including STAT1103) and a weighted average mark (WAM) of 75 across all 3000-level psychology units. This minimum entry requirement also applies to any students who transfer into the Bachelor of Psychology (Honours).

Where demand for places exceeds resources, eligible students will be ranked according to their WAM and offered places until the available places are filled. Should a student not meet the requirements for the fourth year, they will graduate with a three-year accredited undergraduate degree in psychology.
