About

Our degree offers a broad foundation in visual arts and design, developing versatile and confident visual arts practitioners and creative problem solvers. Throughout this course, you will be trained and mentored by staff who are active practitioners and leading researchers and will obtain a mix of skills in studio-based fine art, graphic design, and art and design history and theory. We will prepare you to transition from art student to art practitioner early in the degree through substantial professional practice, and industry internship experiences. Your journey will culminate in third year with a self-directed major project in your chosen area of creative work. You will exhibit in ACU gallery spaces throughout your studies with a final year graduate exhibition showcasing your work.

Areas of study

Visual arts: 3D/4D object design, art and design history and theory, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture.

Administrator; advertising; art conservation; art creative director; art gallery manager; art theory research assistant; art therapist (with further training); art writer; book illustrator; curator; events coordinator; professional artist; theatre and set designer; film maker and editor; visual merchandiser.

Practical experience

Third-year Professional Development and Practice (internship) unit with a professional such as a craftsperson, graphic designer, art critic, art historian, museum/gallery manager or curator who will act as a mentor. There is the opportunity to study abroad and to join lecturers on the Venice Biennale tour or to study art and architecture in Rome.

Honours

Bachelor of Arts (Honours) is available as an additional year to meritorious students.

Assumed knowledge: Any 2 units of English (Band 3).
