About

Medical and radiation physicists work in many different fields related to human health in order to improve quality of life. They are familiar with various forms of therapeutic radiation oncology as well as different methods of diagnostic radiation imaging, and the mechanisms of how such radiation interacts with the human body.

You will gain hands-on experience in photon, neutron and charged particle physics in the undergraduate physics laboratories, as well as field trips to accelerator facilities such as the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO). In your third year, you will also gain practical experience, particularly in electron and X-ray related medical physics at cancer treatment centres and through ANSTO.

To ensure the highest level of industry engagement, professional medical physicists from major hospitals and keynote speakers from industry will deliver key lectures and practical work, as well as co-supervise research projects.

You will learn where medical physics matters most: in hospitals, clinics and nuclear science research facilities. In this course you will gain knowledge in areas relating to nuclear medicine, radiotherapy physics, radiation transport physics modelling, detector and instrumentation physics, and data analysis.

If you continue your studies to an honours or master’s degree, you will learn about Nuclear Medicine, Radiobiology and Radiation Protection in hospitals.

Our Medical Radiation Physics (MRP) degree is backed by clinical associations with numerous hospitals. Over 50% of current practising medical physicists in NSW were educated and trained at UOW.

Our strong ties with industries and government labs such as ANSTO and CSIRO ensure you receive industry exposure throughout your degree.

Areas of study

In this course you will gain knowledge in data analysis, detector and instrumentation physics, nuclear medicine, radiation transport physics modelling, radiotherapy physics. In your second and third years, you will gain hands-on experience in photon, neutron and charged particle physics, and electron and x-ray related medical physics.

Career opportunities

Detector and instrumentation physicist, diagnostic imaging medical physicist, medical imager, medical physics researcher, medical radiation technologist, nuclear medicine technologist, patent officer, radiation oncologist, radiation protection officer, radiation transport physics modeller.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Medical and Radiation Physics degree is accredited by the Australasian College of Physical Scientists and Engineers in Medicine (ACPSEM), USA Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs (CAMPEP) and the Australian Institute of Physics (AIP).

Practical experience

Optional internships, industry projects and other career-ready learning opportunities. Our close ties with industry bodies ensure you receive industry exposure throughout your degree.

ATAR profile

ATAR-based offers only (semester 1, 2023)

Use all ATAR profile data as a guide only; it provides a broad overview of the ATARs and selection ranks of previous Year 12 students admitted into that course. ATARs and selection ranks required for entry in 2024 may be different. If you are unsure about including a course among your preferences, contact the relevant institution.

  1. This ATAR profile table is in line with Commonwealth Government transparency requirements. It is based on offers to recent school leavers (ie completed Year 12 in the last 2 years) who were selected solely or partly on their ATAR. Note that some institutions further differentiate this information on their websites.
  2. The ATAR values exclude any adjustment factors.
  3. The selection ranks include the ATAR and any adjustment factors.

Abbreviations

– = data is not available.
<5 = less than 5 ATAR-based offers were made.
N/A = no offers were made on the basis of ATAR.
NC = new course
NP = Not provided by institution
NR = No reportable profile
NS = No Semester 1 offers
NN = Unavailable (other)
NO = Entry on other criteria
