About

Elevate your creative and visual design skills with the Bachelor of Visual Communication Design program at the University of Newcastle.  You’ll be using your ideas to create the impossible, preferred big and drive innovative change by tapping into visual and design training that will give you the edge in making and creating the art and media content of the future. You’ll be empowered to build a creative practice of your own or win a position as a creative in diverse organisations anywhere in the world. Focus your study around graphic communication & Illustration, interactive media & animation, or the creative arts and learn about diverse career opportunities as a creative maker, designer or artist in games, web, film & television, branding & marketing or art & technology.

Areas of study

You will have the option to major in one of following areas: animation and interaction, creative arts or graphic design and illustration. Other major options are available alongside your visual communication design major, so you can combine your major with media arts production, public relations or songwriting and production.

Practical experience

You will complete 140 hours of supervised placement within your third year of study that will enable you to apply knowledge developed throughout your studies and acquire new knowledge and professional networks to support your career readiness. You will undertake workplace experience in your desired career field, including advertising, marketing, and visual communications.

Professional recognition

Students and graduates of the Bachelor of Visual Communication Design are eligible to become members of the Australian Graphic Design Association, the Design Institute of Australia and the Illustrators Institute of Australia.

Honours

Available as an additional year (or part-time equivalent)  to students based on merit.

Admission criteria

Applicants with recent secondary education

Recommended studies: One or more of Design and Technology, Industrial Technology, Textiles and Design, Visual Arts.

If you have completed or partially completed higher education studies, your grade point average can be converted into a selection rank for admission into our undergraduate programs.

If you completed or partially completed competency-based vocational education and training (such as TAFE, a private Registered Training Provider, or vocational studies undertaken in high school), this can be used to determine your eligibility for admission.
