The construction industry in Australia is booming. Construction managers lead and coordinate building and physical infrastructure projects. Working both on and off site, they schedule and coordinate the design and construction process, including selecting, hiring and supervising trade contractors, as well as the budget and legal aspects of the project. The Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) (Honours) has a high level of professional recognition both in Australia and overseas. Our flexible delivery options make it easy for you to study by distance or work in the industry while completing your degree.

Construction management graduates work in a range of leadership roles in the industry. This includes project management, contract management, quantity surveying, estimating, building surveying, building certification, facilities management, property development and WHS. They manage physical building and infrastructure projects and can be site or office based.

Construction managers lead and coordinate design and construction processes. This includes liaising with clients and consultants, and selecting, hiring and supervising various trade contractors. They’re also responsible for managing the legal and financial aspects of the project.

Practical experience

Construction Management students complete 16 weeks of professional practice. Through your work placement, you’ll build vital professional networks and put your learning into practice.

All University of Newcastle construction management students must complete a total of 16 weeks of industrial experience during their degree:

  • Work Integrated Learning/Industry Placement - 4 weeks. Placement opportunities are provided by industry and then promoted to students directly.  Students may also organise their own industry placement.
  • Industrial Experience - 12 weeks. This can be completed in one block or as shorter placements of no less than two weeks. Through your work placement you’ll build vital professional networks and put your learning into practice.

Honours

All graduates will be awarded with Bachelor of Construction Management (Building) (Honours) with graded honours awarded based on merit.

Applicants with recent secondary education

Recommended studies: Mathematics Advanced, any 2 units of English.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

If you completed or partially completed competency-based vocational education and training (such as TAFE, a private Registered Training Provider, or vocational studies undertaken in high school), this can be used to determine your eligibility for admission.

Studies completed at an AQF Level 4 (Cert IV) or higher provide Guaranteed Entry into many of our undergraduate programs.
