About

Risk is all around us – in investment markets, on the roads, in our health and the climate. The Bachelor of Actuarial Studies will teach you how to apply your mathematical talent in understanding, measuring and managing these risks. Graduates will apply mathematical, statistical, financial, economic and other skills to untangle the most complex and difficult problems facing the commercial world.

Areas of study

Accounting, actuarial studies, economics, finance, statistics. Students are encouraged to use their elective units to complete majors/minors from options across the University.

Career opportunities

Professional actuarial consultant; financial adviser to governments and commercial organisations such as life, general and health insurance companies, superannuation and pension funds, investment companies, banks and stockbrokerage.

Professional recognition

Satisfactory attainment in the professional actuarial subjects may be accepted by the Actuaries Institute for exemption from some examination subjects for Fellowship of the Institute.

Available as an additional year, subject to progress requirements.

The Australian Government pays part of the tuition fee for this course. The remaining balance is paid by the student. Information about ANU student contributions.

Essential requirements for admission

Co-curricular or service experience (Year 12 or IB applicants only): Applicants must demonstrate at least two of the following seven skills: community engagement, inclusion and awareness of diversity, communication, leadership, personal responsibility, teamwork, creative and critical thinking. Check if you meet the ANU co-curricular or service requirement.

Prerequisites

ACT: Specialist Mathematics (major/minor) (160+). NSW: Mathematics Extension 1 (Band E3).

Minimum selection rank: 92.00. Due to the competitive nature of our admissions process, we cannot guarantee entry to applicants who meet the minimum selection rank for their preferred program.
