About

ANU offers an outstanding variety of programs for Australia's next generation of language leaders, with more languages offered than at any other university in Australia. B Languages is a wonderful way to take advantage of that, through the study of two (or more) languages, in combination with other areas of interest. Your language education experience is designed to engage you with the structural, grammatical and idiomatic components of your chosen language or languages. This is further contextualised using cultural, social and historical concepts, issues and topics. You may start anywhere from beginner to higher levels, dependent upon your experience in your chosen languages. Exciting opportunities exist for you to immerse yourself in your chosen language and culture through study abroad, and to combine your language study with a range of other areas.

No prior knowledge of the language you are studying is required. If you have prior experience in the language you are studying you must take a placement test and may be exempt from introductory language subjects.

Areas of study: Ancient Greek, Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, French language and culture, German language and culture, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian language and culture, Japanese, Korean, Latin, Mongolian, Persian, Russian, Sanskrit, Spanish, Tetum, Thai, Vietnamese.

Career opportunities: Language analysis, translation, defence and diplomacy roles in Commonwealth and state government departments, international trade consultancy, tourism, media, translation and interpreting, teaching (with further study).

Practical experience: Opportunities for overseas exchange: visit the ANU website.

Honours: Check course information on the ANU website.

Notes

  1. Use all ATAR profile data as a guide only; it provides a broad overview of the ATARs and selection ranks of previous Year 12 students admitted into that course. ATARs and selection ranks required for entry in 2019 may be different. If you are unsure about including a course among your preferences, contact the relevant institution.
  2. This ATAR profile table is in line with Commonwealth Government transparency requirements. It is based on offers to recent school leavers (ie completed Year 12 in 2015 to 2017) who were selected solely or partly on their ATAR. Note that some institutions further differentiate this information on their websites by publishing:
    • separate data for 2017 Year 12 students and 2015/16 Year 12 students
    • data relating to an entire year's intake (eg all offers made in 2017 – semesters 1 and 2).
  3. The ATAR values exclude any adjustment factors.
  4. The selection ranks include the ATAR and any adjustment factors.
