About

Use sound waves to penetrate soft tissue and learn how to diagnose a wide range of medical and health conditions with UC’s Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound. One of only two courses of its type in NSW and the ACT, you’ll learn the principles of ultrasound technology and gain skills in a range of examination practices including abdominal, paediatric and musculoskeletal.

This course focuses heavily on interactive learning and offers a variety of study modes. Students from both medical and non-medical backgrounds are prepared for a career in a public or private hospital radiology practice or community healthcare service. There is currently a shortage of trained and qualified medical ultrasound professionals making long-term employment highly likely for graduates.

The Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound is accredited by the Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry (ASAR).

Admission criteria

Either of the following:

  • bachelor degree in medical radiation science
  • bachelor degree in any field and successful completion of at least 2 units of degree-level anatomy and physiology.

Applicants must also meet the non-standard English language proficiency requirementsfor this course.

Applicants for the Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound must meet the criteria above AND;

C) provide evidence of an ultrasound training position under the supervision of an Accredited Medical Sonographer.

D) submit a Graduate Diploma in Medical Ultrasound Applicant Agreement Form.

Clinical training

This course requires the completion of 2,200 hours of supervised ultrasound experience under the supervision of an Australian Sonographer Accreditation Registry accredited sonographer. Students are responsible for organising their own training position; however, for non-medical imaging applicants, early skill development will be provided to assist in finding a suitable training position.

In considering applying for this course, please refer to additional important information regarding the clinical training aspects of the course.
