Find your way with Course Compass

12 Nov 2018

THE Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) has deployed the latest cutting-edge technology to launch a new course finder platform for Year 12 students – Course Compass.

Students simply enter their Year 12 courses and estimated ATAR. Course Compass will then display the top fields of study offered to previous UAC applicants with similar academic backgrounds.

Course Compass was developed using machine learning techniques based on neural network modelling – a simplified model of the way the human brain processes information.

The model was trained using data from more than 110,000 recent UAC applicants and has learnt the hidden patterns between students’ Year 12 subjects and the university course offers they received.

The data sets used by Course Compass are complex. There are very few applicants with identical data. For example, given the choice of HSC courses available, in 2017 there were 27,546 different enrolment patterns for ATAR-eligible students; only 209 of these 27,546 combinations were completed by 20 or more students and 19,886 were taken by only one student.

Once ATARs are released on Friday 14 December, students will be able to enter their actual HSC course marks and ATAR to find out what paths have been taken by others with similar results.

‘We know that many Year 12 students are unsure of the path to take with their university studies. The costs to the student, the university and the community of getting that uni course choice wrong are high, so a tool like this that can help point students in the right direction is very welcome', said Kim Paino, General Manager, Marketing and Engagement. ‘UAC is here to help students and universities, and with Course Compass we’re very much hoping that we can do both.’
