How to get into medicine

Entry into undergraduate medicine degrees is highly competitive. Take the following steps to make sure your application is considered.

  1. Register for the Undergraduate Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). Important dates are coming up:
    Booking deadline - 11.59pm on 11 May 2020
    Final booking deadline - 11.59pm on 18 May 2020
    Testing begins - Wednesday 1 July 2020
  2. Complete your UAC application by midnight Wednesday 30 September 2020 – the application processing fee increases after this date.
  3. Apply directly to each university’s Faculty of Medicine. Address any extra requirements specified by each uni.
  4. If you’re invited, attend an interview/assessment. Most unis will use UCAT results to select applicants for interview.

You can apply for these programs straight from school and you’ll start your medical studies in first year:

Graduate medical programs

You can apply for these programs straight from school and you’ll complete your undergraduate degree before progressing to the postgraduate Doctor of Medicine. There are specific requirements for progressing to the Doctor of Medicine once you finish your undergraduate degree.

You can apply for these programs straight from school. They are designed as pathways to the Doctor of Medicine.

Have a Plan B

If you miss out on a place in 2021, here are a couple of Plan B options:

Option 1

  1. Complete one year of an undergraduate degree.
  2. Re-sit UCAT.
  3. Reapply for undergraduate medicine via UAC and individual medical faculties.

Option 2

  1. Complete a full undergraduate degree.
  2. Sit GAMSAT.
  3. Apply directly to the individual medical faculties for graduate medicine.

Do your research

  • Complete a UCAT practice test so that you know what to expect.
  • Talk to the unis and find out as much as you can about the different degrees on offer and the various pathways to medicine.
  • Register for a careers expo: in response to COVID-19, a number of online events are coming up (visit Key Dates and select 'Event').
  • Check all the key dates for applying to Medicine.
