How to get into medicine

Entry into undergraduate medicine degrees is highly competitive. Take the following steps to make sure your application is considered.

  • Register for UMAT by 5pm on Friday 1 June. Late registrations will be accepted until 5pm on Friday 15 June 2018 on payment of a late fee. The test will take place on Wednesday 29 July 2018.
  • Complete your UAC application between Wednesday 1 August and Friday 28 September.
  • Apply directly to each university’s Faculty of Medicine. Address any extra requirements specified by each uni.
  • If you’re invited, attend an interview/assessment. Unis will use UMAT results to select applicants for interview.

Undergraduate medical programs

You can apply for these programs straight from school and you’ll start your medical studies in first year.

University of Newcastle / University of New England: 
Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program (MD-JMP)

UNSW Sydney: 
Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine (also offered as Bachelor of Arts / Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine)

Western Sydney University: 
Doctor of Medicine (students also graduate with a Bachelor of Clinical Science)

 

Graduate medical programs

You can apply for these programs straight from school and you’ll complete your undergraduate degree before progressing to the postgraduate Doctor of Medicine. Each uni has specific requirements for progressing to the Doctor of Medicine once you finish your undergrad degree.

University of Sydney:
Bachelor of Arts / Doctor of Medicine
Bachelor of Science / Doctor of Medicine

Have a Plan B

If you miss out on a place in 2019, here are a couple of Plan B options:

1. Complete one year of an undergraduate degree.
2. Re-sit UMAT.
3. Reapply for undergraduate medicine via UAC and individual medical faculties.
1. Complete a full undergraduate degree.
2. Sit GAMSAT.
3. Apply directly to the individual medical faculties for graduate medicine.
