Admission requirements

Specific admission assumed knowledge is indicated for particular courses.

Australian secondary studies
2008 and previous Australian Year 12
If you are a 2008 Australian Year 12
student you will be considered for admission on the basis of your UAI or equivalent.
If you have previously completed an ACT Year 12 Tertiary Package, NSW HSC,
interstate equivalent or Leaving Certificate (after 1960), you will be considered
for admission on the basis of your UAI or equivalent. If you have attempted
other studies since then, these will also be taken into account in the assessment
of your application.
Offers made to applicants who have a UAI below the published
cut-off
UC has a number of alternative pathways for admission, which may allow 2008
NSW and ACT Year 12 applicants to receive an offer to a course even though
they have a UAI below the published cut-off.
-
They include:
- Educational Access Scheme (EAS) – Access Scheme
- special consideration on the basis of disadvantage not covered by EAS
- Foundation Program (for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander applicants)
- Regional Bonus Points Scheme.
For details read the relevant sections below.
Regional Bonus Points Scheme
UC recognises that higher education participation rates are often lower in regional NSW compared with some metropolitan areas. UC offers five bonus points to current school leavers in the Greater Canberra Region. UC will automatically award students an additional five points on their UAI when they apply to study at UC.
The scheme does not include the ACT and Queanbeyan and applies only to Australian students.
Australian tertiary studies
If you achieved reasonable results in a degree course at any Australian university or in any nationally accredited course, you will be considered for admission on the basis of the qualification scoring the highest rank.
Exclusion: If you have previously been excluded from a tertiary institution, you must provide UC with a detailed supporting statement outlining the reasons for exclusion and why you believe you would be more successful in future studies.
Previous University of Canberra students
Students applying to return after an absence
If you were
enrolled at UC (or the CCAE) in previous years, but withdrew from the course,
you must apply to return to this University through UAC.
Students enrolled at, or on deferment from, UC in 2008
If you are currently enrolled at UC until the end of semester 2, 2008 or on deferment, and wish to apply for admission to a different UC course, you
may apply directly to UC.
Overseas qualifications
Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia with overseas qualifications must contact the UC Admissions Office to discuss eligibility for admission before lodging an application with UAC. Refer to table 7 - Commonly accepted overseas secondary qualifications for information on overseas secondary qualifications.
If you have secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English proficiency. For requirements refer to table 5 – English language proficiency.
Alternative entry
University preparation schemes – available through the University of Canberra College (UCC)
UC-PREP is designed to provide mature age students who are over 21 years or have more than two years work experience with a pathway and preparation for studies at UC. The program
can be studied as either a one-year (two-semester) or an intensive (one-semester)
program.
UC-START is a one-semester program that has been developed for students who did not gain entry to UC. Students study two subjects from their preferred degree and if they successfully pass both subjects they are eligible for entry to UC. Students can gain academic credit in their chosen degree for the two subjects studied.
UC-CONNECT is both a preparation and a pathway program for school leavers whose current academic qualifications deny them entry to a UC degree. Students study three academic preparation subjects for a total of eight hours per week. For more information call UCC (02) 6201 5709 or visit www.canberra.edu.au/college.
Tertiary preparation courses
You may be considered for admission
on the basis of an approved pre-tertiary studies course conducted by a university,
any Australian TAFE institution or the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT).
Work experience
It may be possible to gain admission on the basis of substantial work experience.
When submitting your UAC application, you must supply documentary evidence
of your employment, such as a letter from your employer detailing dates of
employment, category of position and the types of duties performed. Your work
experience does not necessarily need to be within the same field as the course/s
for which you have applied.
Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)
Applicants who will be 21 years of age or older on 1 March 2007 and do not have suitable qualification for entry to University may take STAT. For further details read STAT.
Educational Access Scheme
The University's Access Scheme assists recent school leavers whose education during Years 11 and 12 has been disadvantaged and who, consequently, may not gain entrance to their preferred degree course. For more information about the scheme, read the EAS booklet produced by UAC, which includes an EAS application form. The booklet and application form can be downloaded from this website.
The main closing date for EAS applications is Tuesday 30 September 2008. You must submit your EAS application by 30 September to guarantee that it will be considered in time for the Main Round of offers. The late closing date for EAS applications is Friday 28 November 2008.
