Macquarie University
Ranked among the world’s top 200 universities, Macquarie University is renowned for its international outlook, pioneering research, strong industry links and exceptional graduate outcomes.
Located on 126ha of parkland strategically positioned in the high-technology corridor of Sydney’s north-west, the University provides an environment that encourages an active academic and social life. The North Ryde campus is adjacent to the modern Macquarie Shopping Centre, which has regular bus services operating to and from the city and other suburban locations. A new underground railway station at Macquarie University is expected to commence services by early 2009.
The University has an enviable reputation as one of Australia’s premier higher education teaching and research institutions. Undergraduate degrees at Macquarie are distinguished by the flexibility of their programs. Students in most programs can choose a main area of specialisation and at the same time combine units from two or more areas to form an interdisciplinary program. There is also the flexibility to change direction and still retain credit for studies already completed. It should be noted, however, that some degree courses, such as B Chiropractic Science and B Education (Early Childhood Education), have programs of study that are almost fully prescribed.
International College of Management, Sydney (ICMS)
Situated on Sydney Harbour's North Head overlooking Manly Beach and the Pacific Ocean, ICMS is housed in one of Sydney's most significant heritage buildings and is located on 20ha of parkland. Manly Beach is a five-minute walk from the College and the centre of Sydney is 15 minutes from Manly Wharf by fast ferry. Read the ICMS course descriptions in the course search.
Macquarie City Campus (MQC)
Macquarie City Campus is another Macquarie University innovation. It is located in the heart of Sydney’s Central Business District and offers some of Macquarie University’s best known programs. Within walking distance are key business areas, including Martin Place and the Australian Stock Exchange, as well as many of Sydney’s tourist attractions. Wynyard train station and bus stops are directly below the campus and Circular Quay ferry wharves are only five minutes away.
The range of major studies and units offered at the city campus will initially be more selective than the main campus and applicants can call MQC on (02) 9964 6533 for further information about offerings. Applicants can also contact the MQC Admissions Team for information on commencing studies in Trimester 3, 2008 (November), or alternative entry paths.

Admission requirements
In order to be admitted as a candidate for a Bachelor degree at Macquarie University you need to satisfy the general requirements listed in one of the following categories and be selected for enrolment in competition with other applicants.
Australian Secondary studies
Selection will be based on UAI or equivalent obtained from an Australian Year 12 in 2008 or earlier (unless you have undertaken tertiary study, including TAFE). You can qualify for admission to a particular degree course at Macquarie on the basis of your UAI or equivalent. To compare interstate Year 12 results, refer to table 4 - Year 12 conversion table on this website. The course descriptions in the course search show the minimum UAI cut-offs required for admission to particular degree courses in 2008.
Offers made to applicants who have a UAI below the published
cut-off
Macquarie University has a number of alternative pathways for admission, which
may allow 2008 NSW and ACT Year 12 applicants to receive an offer to a course
even though they have a UAI below the published cut-off. They include:
- Educational Access Scheme - Lighthouse Scheme
- special consideration for elite athletes or performers
- uniTEST – an equity initiative that recognises that the UAI alone does not always indicate aptitude or ability to undertake tertiary studies. The uniTEST pathway is designed to support those whose disadvantage during their schooling impacted on their final results. For more information visit www.reg.mq.edu.au/unitest
- Warawara Alternative Entry Program (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders)
- students selected from Level 2 School Partners Scheme
- Access Engineering Macquarie – an alternative pathway to study engineering at Macquarie – read engineering course descriptions for more information
- for a select number of students - strong performance in Year 12 subjects relevant to the course.
For further information on methods of selection for the qualifications listed above, and other qualifications that may lead to eligibility, obtain the booklet Pathways to Macquarie by calling (02) 9850 7314.
Australian tertiary studies
If you have ever undertaken tertiary studies you will be considered for selection on your overall record of academic merit; that is both secondary and tertiary study. Applicants with tertiary award studies, but who have not completed a Year 12 certificate, will be considered for selection on the basis of their tertiary rank.
If you are a former Macquarie University student applying to return to the same undergraduate degree after an absence, you must apply directly to the University if you have not studied at another tertiary institution, including TAFE, or completed further secondary studies during your absence. If you have completed further secondary studies or attempted tertiary studies, including TAFE, since you were last enrolled at Macquarie you must apply through UAC.
Overseas qualifications
Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia with overseas qualifications must provide correctly verified documentation with their application (read Documentation). Refer to table 7 - Commonly accepted overseas secondary qualifications for information on overseas secondary qualifications.
If you apply on the basis of overseas qualifications you may be required to sit for an English language proficiency test.
Alternative entry
- Alternative pathways to Macquarie University include:
- completion of a Macquarie University non-award program of 12 or more credit points with an overall minimum grade point average of 2.0
- completion of 10 units of the Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TPC) at a TAFE college
- limited UAI – a Board-approved program of between five and nine units from the HSC (must be aged 21 as at 1 March 2009)
- Access Engineering Macquarie – an alternative pathway to study engineering at Macquarie – read engineering course descriptions for more information
- completion of a Diploma of Business Administration or Commerce or Computing or Communication at the Sydney Institute of Business and Technology (SIBT).
A grade-point average requirement must be met to permit entry to the second year of the relevant Macquarie program with credit for previous studies. SIBT is a private tertiary college operating under contract on the Macquarie campus and using university facilities. For information call the SIBT Admissions Officer on (02) 9850 6222.
