Admission requirements
Admission to courses is competitive, with selection based on a combination of academic merit and a selection committee’s assessment of an applicant’s ability to complete a course. Applicants must meet both the basic admission requirements (see Minimum entry requirements below) and any additional requirements of Faculties for the course to which they seek admission.
Applicants for award courses at La Trobe University must normally be at least 16 years of age by 31 December in the preceding year to be eligible for admission. Applicants who do not meet this requirement should make a case for admission, which will be considered by the appropriate Faculty Dean.
Minimum entry requirements
- Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- the satisfactory completion of both the HSC and any two units of English. Any of the HSC English studies satisfy this requirement however these units must be completed in sequence and in the same calendar year. Performance Band level requirements vary between courses (see individual course entries)
- 2008 Australian Year 12 – see below
- questionnaires, interviews, auditions, portfolios and/or tests are also needed for admission to some courses. Read 'Additional selection criteria' in course descriptions
- have previously satisfied HSC or its equivalent
- be a current or previous Australian tertiary student (this includes TAFE study judged post Year 12) – see Australian tertiary studies below

Australian secondary studies
2008 Australian Year 12
If you are a 2008 Australian Year 12 student you will generally be admitted on the basis of your UAI or equivalent. 2008 Australian Year 12 students who have previously undertaken Year 12 will be considered on the basis of their latest UAI or equivalent.
Offers made to applicants who have a UAI below the published
cut-off
- Most students admitted to La Trobe University have a UAI on or above the published cut-off, but various schemes allow the consideration of supplementary information that facilitates entry below that cut-off. They include:
- Rural and Regional Access Scheme (RRAS) – see below
- SALT scheme – see below
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Scheme
- guaranteed entry – see below
- strong performance in Year 12 subjects relevant to the course of study - applies to some courses; read the course descriptions for details.
For more information, visit Access La Trobe University at www.latrobe.edu.au/access.
Rural and Regional Access Scheme (RRAS)
The University may award bonus points to applicants from regional schools in NSW and Victoria; for 2009 details visit www.latrobe.edu.au/access.
SALT scheme
The Schools Access La Trobe (SALT) scheme will allow students from selected schools in Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia to gain entry into a degree program at La Trobe University based on a recommendation from the school, rather than solely on their ENTER, UAI or TER.
The aim of the scheme is to increase educational opportunities for individual students and to improve participation rates in tertiary education for schools. For further details and application forms visit www.latrobe.edu.au/access.
Guaranteed entry
La Trobe University will guarantee entry into CSP undergraduate places in selected courses in 2009 for all current Year 12 students who achieve the required UAI (or equivalent) and meet any prerequisites and special requirements. Applicants who do not achieve a UAI (or equivalent) which will guarantee them entry into a course will be considered through normal selection processes. Read individual course entries.
Australian tertiary studies
If you have completed at least a semester of full-time tertiary level studies (university, post-Year 12 TAFE or equivalent qualifications), you will be considered on the basis of your overall record of academic merit.
Note: You are not eligible to apply through the Alternative Category Entry (ACE) Scheme.
Overseas qualifications
Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia with overseas qualifications must contact La Trobe University to discuss eligibility for admission before submitting an application to UAC. Refer to table 7 – Commonly accepted overseas secondary qualifications for information on overseas secondary qualifications.
To check whether you are required to sit for an English language proficiency test, read English language proficiency or call (03) 9479 1199.
Alternative entry
Mature age entry
If you completed Year 12 more than three years ago and/or are aged 21 years or over on 1 January 2009, but have not completed a semester of tertiary-level studies (this includes both university and post-Year 12 TAFE or equivalent qualifications), you may choose to apply through the Alternative Category Entry (ACE) Scheme and complete extra requirements.
Applicants who meet the minimum requirements but who wish to have their academic potential reassessed because their studies were completed many years ago; who are dissatisfied with their academic performance in previous studies or whose previous studies do not include the appropriate prerequisite subjects may choose to apply via mature-age entry because it may increase their competitiveness during selection.
