Charles Sturt University (CSU) is a national university with an international reputation for excellence. Admission requirements

The University will admit you to an undergraduate course, subject to a place being available, if it believes you have a reasonable prospect of completing the course. In determining your prospects of success in the course, CSU will consider your previous studies and/or other attainments and experience. Some courses have additional selection criteria – refer to individual course descriptions.

Australian Secondary studies

2008 Australian Year 12 students
Admission is normally based on your UAI or equivalent. You may also be admitted on the basis of a strong performance in subjects that are relevant to the course you wish to study. The assumed knowledge and recommended studies subjects are listed in the course entries.

No prerequisite subjects are specified for admission. Some courses, however, indicate assumed knowledge subjects that provide the level of knowledge necessary for successful completion of first-year university subjects. It is your responsibility to ensure that you have studied the appropriate subjects to undertake the course you choose.

Offers made to applicants who have a UAI below the published cut-off
CSU has a number of alternative pathways for admission, which may allow 2008 Year 12 applicants to receive an offer to a course even though they have a UAI below the published cut-off.

They include:
• Educational Access Scheme
• special consideration for elite athletes or performers
• Koori Admissions Program
• Principal's Report Entry Program
• Regional Bonus Scheme
• strong performance in Year 12 subjects relevant to the course of study (read ‘Assumed Knowledge’ above) – applies to some courses only.

Previous Australian Year 12
CSU will consider admission on the basis of previous Australian Year 12 studies.

Other studies
CSU will consider an overseas equivalent of the NSW HSC and the International Baccalaureate Diploma.

Australian tertiary studies

Studies such as those listed below are considered indicators that you will complete a course at the University:
• a course completed or part-completed at a university, college of advanced education, or other accredited tertiary institution
• an approved course completed or part-completed at a TAFE college or other accredited post-secondary institution, including the Tertiary Preparation Certificate
• approved foundation studies or bridging courses
• subjects studied through the CSU Associate Student Program or at another university.

Overseas qualifications

Applicants with overseas qualifications must contact CSU to discuss eligibility for admission before submitting an application to UAC. Refer also to table 7 – Commonly accepted overseas secondary qualifications for information on overseas secondary qualifications.

If you hold overseas secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction you must provide evidence of English language proficiency.

Alternative entry

CSU will consider the following attainment and experience in determining your prospects for success:
• voluntary or paid work experience
• performance in exams conducted by professional bodies
• nursing qualifications gained by hospital-based training
• completion of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) or uniTEST.

Vocational experience
The University places considerable importance on vocational experience in determining the likelihood of your success in a course. For some courses, your admission rank will automatically be increased by up to 4 points if previous vocational experience is closely related to the course you wish to study.

Regional Bonus Scheme (RBS)*
If you are a current Year 12 student and will complete the HSC/VCE at a school or TAFE college in the University's region, or a non-Year 12 applicant who resides in the University's region, your admissions rank will automatically be increased by five points under the University's Regional Bonus Scheme (RBS).

Principal's Report Entry Program (PREP)*
The objective of the PREP scheme is to attract current school leavers from high schools in the region served by the University who, during their senior high school years, have been identified by their school principal as consistent achievers with the potential to succeed at university study. 2008 Year 12 students may be guaranteed an offer of a place in full-time on-campus courses prior to the release of their UAI. Application forms are available from your secondary school principal.

* The region served by the RBS is all of regional Australia, excluding the Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth metropolitan areas, but including Darwin and Hobart. The region served by PREP is all of Regional NSW and Victoria, excluding the Sydney and Melbourne metropolitan areas.

Educational Access Scheme

The University, under its Special Consideration for Admission Scheme, may give special consideration to educationally disadvantaged applicants. For more information about this scheme, read the Educational Access Schemes (EAS) booklet produced by UAC, which includes an EAS application form.

EAS booklets are available from UAC or Student Centres at participating institutions. If you are a 2008 Australian Year 12 student you can obtain a copy of the booklet from your school/TAFE college. The booklet and application form can also be downloaded from Educational Access Schemes (EAS) on this website.

The main closing date for EAS applications is Tuesday 30 September 2008. You must submit your EAS application by 30 September to guarantee that it will be considered in time for the Main Round of offers. The late closing date for EAS applications is Friday 28 November 2008.

Equity Scholarships

CSU offers the following Equity Scholarship:
• Commonwealth Scholarships (CS) and
• Institution Equity Scholarships, comprising CSU Equity Study Grants.

All Equity Scholarships applications for CSU are processed centrally through UAC. This applies if you are applying to study a course through UAC, the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC), direct to the University and if you are currently enrolled in a course at CSU.

You only have to submit one application to UAC to be considered for all Equity Scholarships for which you are eligible at CSU. To submit your application got to Equity Scholarships Online.

The main closing date for Equity Scholarship applications is Tuesday 30 September 2008. The late closing date is Friday 28 November 2008.

Special consideration

If you are an elite athlete or performer, whose training and competitive commitments have affected your preparation for the HSC, you may be eligible for special consideration.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders may be admitted under the Koori Admissions Program (KAP). Admission is based on a week-long assessment of the individual's academic and personal merit, which takes place at the University in December. KAP assessment will consider any educational disadvantage.

Courses available by direct application

Applications for part-time on-campus courses are made directly to the University, not UAC. Application forms are available from CSU. Applications close 2 January 2009. Late applications will be considered until 16 February 2009 if places are available after on-time applications have been assessed.

Late applications
The University will consider late direct applications for full-time study after the UAC final closing date and 16 February 2009 if places are available after on-time applications have been assessed. If you wish to apply directly to CSU you must do this by completing the CSU application form, not through UAC.

You should also contact CSU for advice on your prospects of receiving an offer before submitting your application.

Distance education

CSU offers off-campus courses by distance education study. You must apply directly to CSU for admission to these courses, using a CSU application form, not through UAC.

Enrolment

Acceptance of offer

Acceptance and enrolment procedures are sent to successful applicants when they receive an offer of a place in a course. It is strongly recommended that you include an email address in your UAC application to speed up your online application for accommodation, which must be made in the days immediately after receipt of an offer.

Advanced standing/academic credit

If you believe you qualify for credit towards your proposed course, talk to the co-ordinator of the course for advice. Applications for credit are considered during Orientation Week.

Deferment

CSU may grant one year's deferment of enrolment. Deferment will lapse if tertiary studies are undertaken.

Loans

CSU administers a loan scheme to provide short-term financial assistance to enable students to continue their studies. Loans are available to Commonwealth-supported students who are currently enrolled at this University. Students also need to be Australian citizens or have permanent residence status, have a satisfactory academic record and the financial capacity to repay a loan. Scholarships

The Charles Sturt Foundation administers an extensive scholarship program with scholarships ranging in value from $1 000 to $6 000 for one year, to $18 000 over the duration of a three-year course. For further information visit www.csu.edu.au/student/scholarships/.

Selection criteria include academic performance, motivation and commitment to school and/or community life. Scholarship applications for students entering their first year generally close mid-February, so you are advised to make a scholarship application as soon as you make a decision on university study.

Student services and facilities

Facilities and services available to students include religious and community connections, childcare, counselling (career and personal), health services, learning assistance, libraries and computing services, educational centres for Indigenous students, services for students with disabilities, sporting and recreation facilities, canteens, dining rooms, cafes and mini supermarkets, security and buses to and from the campuses. Accommodation

CSU has University-managed accommodation at Albury-Thurgoona, Bathurst, Dubbo, Orange and Wagga Wagga. Students may elect to live in either full board or self-catered accommodation at Bathurst, Orange and Wagga Wagga. Self-catered only is available at the other campuses.

Accommodation is fully furnished with shared bathroom facilities and common areas within each complex. An extensive residential support network exists at each campus to provide pastoral and welfare care to residents. Telephone and data systems with voicemail allow access to the University's computer network and the internet.

It is strongly recommended that applicants include an email address in their UAC application to speed up their online application for accommodation, which must be made in the days immediately after receipt of an offer.
