Australian National University

Outstanding research is at the heart of everything The Australian National University (ANU) does.

Ranked as Australia's leading university and one of the world's great research universities by The Times Higher Education Supplement, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University's Institute of Higher Education and Newsweek International, ANU offers students the chance to study alongside some of the world's best academics. Exceptional teaching at ANU was recognised in the Australian Government's Learning and Teaching Performance Fund for 2007, in which the University achieved top marks in every discipline group for which it was eligible.

Australia's only national university, ANU was established by the Australian Parliament in 1946 to enhance the economic, social, cultural and intellectual development of the nation.

Located on a picturesque 145ha campus in the heart of Canberra, ANU is within easy walking distance of the retail and social facilities of the city centre, and close to many of the city's sporting, recreational and cultural attractions. ANU has become a coveted destination for students, offering unique research-led courses and outstanding access to study resources.

The University provides state-of-the-art technology, including well-equipped lecture theatres, computing and laboratory facilities, five main libraries and a wide choice of accommodation options. Adjacent to the city centre, the campus offers excellent medical, academic skills and learning centres as well as a wide range of shops, restaurants and sporting facilities.

The University is focused on excellence in all it does and has forged close links with government, business and research institutions in Australia and abroad.

Admission requirements

Admission to all programs is on a competitive basis, taking into account all relevant academic qualifications. Program intakes are determined by the number of places available, and the number of eligible applicants seeking entry to those programs.

The qualifications listed below will be considered when assessing your application. If you hold more than one qualification, admission will usually be based on the overall record. Tertiary qualifications are generally weighted more heavily than secondary. If you have completed an approved tertiary preparation course or alternative entry scheme you will be assessed on the results of that scheme alone, unless you have undertaken subsequent study.

Programs in Design Arts, Digital Arts, Music and Visual Arts have special selection criteria – refer to the individual course descriptions.

Australian Secondary studies

If you are a 2008 or previous Australian Year 12 student with no further study, admission to ANU is based on your UAI or equivalent.

Not all interstate abridged secondary qualifications are acceptable for admission – if you have abridged secondary qualifications contact the ANU Admissions Office before submitting an application through UAC.

Offers made to applicants who have a UAI below the published cut-off
Most students admitted to the ANU have a UAI at or above the published cut-off, but various schemes allow the consideration of supplementary information, which may facilitate entry below that cut-off. They include:

  • Educational Access Scheme (EAS) – Countrywide Access Scheme
  • special consideration on the basis of disadvantage not covered by EAS
  • Indigenous Australian Admission Scheme
  • Elite Athletes
  • strong performance in relevant Year 12 subjects – for limited number of programs (refer to individual course descriptions)
  • consideration on the basis of a statement provided by the applicant – Law only.
  • Note: Bonus points will be granted under one of these categories only.

For details read the relevant sections below.

    Australian tertiary studies

The following qualifications from an approved institution will be considered as a basis for admission to undergraduate programs:
    • completion of an associate diploma, diploma or advanced diploma (except for admission to Law programs)
    • successful completion of at least half of a first-year full-time study load (0.5 FTE) of degree-level studies at an approved university. Admission to Law programs requires a full year (1.0 FTE) of such studies

Note: The definition of what constitutes a standard full-time study load can vary between universities. Contact the ANU Admissions Office if you are not sure that you have completed 0.5 FTE.

If you have substantial failures or have completed less than half of a first year full-time study load of degree level studies, contact the ANU Admissions Office regarding minimum admission requirements. You may also wish to request special consideration of your application - read 'Special consideration' below.

    Present and former ANU students
If you are currently enrolled in an ANU degree program, or if you are on approved leave in 2008, and you wish to transfer to another ANU program for 2009, you must apply for an internal transfer directly to the University by 5 December 2008. For enquiries about approved leave status contact the relevant college office.

Former ANU students (including graduates) and students who will be completing an ANU degree in 2008 who wish to commence a second degree, such as Graduate Law, and students who have studied at the University and whose enrolment has been terminated, must apply for readmission through UAC.

If you are a former student who has not completed a degree and you have been absent from studies for a period prior to 2008, you must contact the relevant faculty office about your eligibility to continue in your program in 2009.

    CIT Associate Degree students
If you have completed (or expect to complete) one of the CIT Associate Degrees, which articulate into an ANU degree program, you must still apply for admission to ANU via UAC. You must also write to the ANU Admissions Office to advise us of your UAC application number.

    Overseas qualifications

Australian citizens or permanent residents of Australia with overseas qualifications should seek information about eligibility for admission from the ANU Admissions Office before submitting an application through UAC. Refer to table 7 – Commonly accepted overseas secondary qualifications for information on overseas secondary qualifications.

Note: The SAT alone is not acceptable for admission to ANU: A USA high school diploma must accompany the SAT.

If you hold overseas secondary or tertiary qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction you must provide evidence of english language proficiency. Qualifications that may be accepted by this University as satisfying English proficiency are set out in table 5 – English language proficiency. For more information contact the ANU Admissions Office before submitting an application.

    Alternative entry

Applicants over 21 years of age
If you do not meet any of the University's minimum admission requirements outlined above, and you will be aged 21 years or over on 1 March 2009, you may apply through the University's Special Adult Entry Scheme (SAES). Entry is on the basis of performance in both components of the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) – Multiple Choice and Written English or equivalent – taken since 1998. If you have studied at degree level within the last two years, you are not eligible to apply through SAES. You may not re-apply through SAES within three years.

ACT and local NSW residents who meet the age requirements stated above may qualify for admission by completing the University Preparation Scheme (UPS) offered by the University's Centre for Continuing Education and sitting the STAT Multiple Choice.

SAES and UPS applicants must identify the scheme through which they are applying by completing question 12 (UPS) or 17 (SAES) on their UAC application. You must also register to sit the STAT Multiple Choice and (for SAES) the STAT Written English using the UAC STAT registration form. For further details call the ANU Admissions Office on (02) 6125 3046 or 6125 5594.

Note: These provisions do not apply for entry to programs in Design Arts, Music, or Visual Arts or to international applicants.

    Tertiary preparation courses
Applicants over 21 years of age on 1 March 2009 can be considered for admission on the basis of performance in the ANU University Preparation Scheme (refer to 'Applicants over 21 years of age' above), the Certificate in Pre-Tertiary Studies offered by the Canberra Institute of Technology, or other approved tertiary preparation schemes. Contact the ANU Admissions Office for details of other approved courses.

Applicants through a tertiary preparation course or the Special Adult Entry Scheme will be assessed on the results of that scheme alone unless they have undertaken subsequent study. Previous qualifications will not be considered. For further information on the length of time these awards remain valid for admission, and the requirements for programs with mathematics prerequisites, call the ANU Admissions Office on (02) 6125 5594.

Applicants who are at least 18 years of age in 2008 may qualify for admission to the University in 2009 on the basis of the NSW TAFE Tertiary Preparation Certificate.

Limited UAI/ACT Year 12 mature age package
2008 NSW HSC students must read Limited UAI for details. To be eligible to apply for admission in 2008 on the basis of an ACT or interstate Year 12 mature age package, you must have been 20 years by 1 March 2008.

Note: Application through mature age preparation schemes is not available for entry to programs in Design Arts, Music or Visual Arts.

    Educational Access Scheme

The Countrywide Access Program aims to assist current or recent Year 12 students with good academic potential who have experienced serious long-term disadvantage in their educational preparation for tertiary entrance. Disadvantages may include geographical isolation, serious medical problems, disability and family relationship problems.

For more information about the scheme read the Educational Access Schemes (EAS) booklet produced by UAC – an EAS application form is included in the booklet. EAS booklets are available from UAC or student centres at participating institutions. If you are a 2008 Australian Year 12 student you can obtain a copy of the booklet from your school or TAFE college. The booklet and application form can also be downloaded from this website.

The main closing date for EAS applications is Tuesday 30 September 2008. You must submit your EAS application by this date to guarantee that it will be considered in time for the Main Round of offers. The late closing date for EAS applications is Friday 28 November 2008.

In addition to submitting an EAS form, you must also apply for admission to ANU through UAC. For further information on eligibility, call the Countrywide Co-ordinator on (02) 6125 3601.

    Special consideration

If your previous academic performance has been adversely affected by circumstances beyond your control, and you are not eligible for consideration under the Countrywide Access Scheme (read 'Educational Access Schemes') or other schemes on this page because you are not a recent school leaver, or you have been dismissed from ANU under the Academic Progress rules, you may submit a Request for Special Consideration (Admissions/Transfers) form directly to the Admissions Manager at ANU (the form is at www.anu.edu.au/sas/forms/Special_Consideration.pdf). If you are seeking special consideration you must also apply for admission through UAC. Requests for special consideration must include original supporting documentation from relevant authorities such as a school counsellor or medical practitioner.

Requests should be submitted as early as possible and those received after 2 January 2009 may not be considered before the UAC Main Round of offers. Requests are considered in conjunction with all other information and do not necessarily lead to a variation in the application of selection criteria or cut-offs. Generally, special consideration is granted only to applicants whose overall entrance rank is just below the cut-off.

Note: If you have already applied for consideration under the Countrywide Access Scheme an additional request for special consideration will only be considered in exceptional circumstances.

If you are an SAES or UPS applicant whose performance in the STAT has been affected by illness you may apply to ANU for special consideration. Requests must be accompanied by medical evidence of illness on the test day and be submitted as soon as possible after the test so that another sitting may be arranged if appropriate.

    Elite Athletes

ANU is willing to consider applications for special consideration from elite athletes who are recognised as such by the National Athlete Career and Education (ACE) Program of the Australian Sports Commission. Write to the Deputy Admissions Manager, identifying yourself as an elite athlete if you wish to seek consideration under this scheme for admission purposes. You must write and sign the letter yourself - you should not rely on a parent, coach or ACE adviser to make the application on your behalf. You may attach supporting documents or endorsements from such people, but you are responsible for making your own case. For further information on ANU's elite athlete policy visit www.anu.edu.au/sas/elite_athletes.

For an application form and information on the scheme, including selection details, call the JABAL Indigenous Australian Centre on (02) 6125 3520.
