Qualifications FAQs

  • Where can I find information on the ATAR?

Read the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) for more information.

  • I've lost my ATAR advice notice. Can I get another one?

If you've lost your ATAR Advice Notice UAC can issue you with an ATAR confirmation letter. The fee is $48 (the original ATAR Advice Notice is free). To request an ATAR confirmation letter, print out this form and post to UAC.

  • I am applying on the basis of my Year 12 studies. Do the institutions take anything else into account?

Admission to most tertiary courses in 2012 is based on your performance in the 2011 HSC – you'll be ranked on the basis of your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Institutions may also take other criteria into account such as a portfolio, interview, audition, questionnaire or a test for certain courses either instead of, or together with, the ATAR.

Additional selection criteria can be found in the course descriptions available through the course search.

All Australian states and territories use a common scale, or index, which allows the comparison of overall measures of achievement in Year 12 across time and states. Different names are used in different states and territories. Refer to the Year 12 conversion table and read Australian and New Zealand secondary studies for more information.

  • What do the institutions take into account if I've studied since finishing my Year 12?

Most institutions take into account any or all of the following when considering your application – tertiary studies, secondary studies, post-secondary studies, professional and paraprofessional studies, STAT, and other relevant factors such as maturity, employment history and special circumstances.

Refer to the institution entries for more information on the qualifications they will consider with each of your course preferences.

  • Will the universities accept my overseas qualifications?

If you're applying on the basis of overseas secondary or tertiary qualifications, contact the relevant institutions to discuss your eligibility for admission before applying through UAC.

If you have qualifications from countries where English is not the standard language of instruction, you must provide evidence of English language proficiency. For requirements, read the English language proficiency FAQs.

  • Will all institutions consider my work experience/employment?

If you are a Year 12 applicant, your employment experience is generally not taken into consideration.

For non-Year 12 applicants, some institutions will take employment experience into account for admissions purposes. Read employment experience for more information. You'll need to submit a statement of service with your application.

  • I've completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB). How will my IB Diploma results compare with the ATAR?

  • Can I get advanced standing/academic credit for my previous tertiary studies?

If you've already studied at tertiary level, you may get credit for those studies when you enrol. Each institution has its own policy, which you should check carefully.

For more information contact the relevant institution.

  • Do I have to tell UAC about all my studies and qualifications?

You must tell us about any completed secondary studies such as Australian Year 12 certificates, and both complete and incomplete certificate, degree and diploma-level studies.
