Assumed knowledge: Any two units of English plus Mathematics. Graduates intending to seek employment in NSW schools to teach at secondary level must have achieved specific levels of study in English at the NSW HSC (or equivalent). For specific details of these requirements, read Special government policies apply. If you do not meet the requirements when you commence the course, the University offers study concurrent with your degree to achieve the required level.

Recommended studies: Four units of science selected from Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environment or Physics. Students with a limited background in these subjects are advised to enrol in bridging courses held in February each year.

Additional selection criteria: Dean’s Scholar program. In addition to submitting your UAC application, you must also submit a completed Dean’s Scholar application and attend an interview in December. Download the application form from www.uow.edu.au/educ. The Dean’s Scholar program has a limited intake. Selection is based on a combination of a minimum ATAR of 90.00 and a successful Dean’s Scholar application and interview.

Major studies: Educational theory and practice, science.

Practical experience: Opportunities for professional experience are provided in each year of the program.

Professional experience: Most states and territories of Australia as well as the UK, Asia and Canada. This degree is currently recognised by the NSW Institute of Teachers.

Career opportunities: Examples include teaching science and related occupations in commercial, industrial and government areas.

Additional information: This course includes a minimum study of three of the following subjects: chemistry, physics, biology and geology at a basic level, followed by a specialisation in your chosen field.
