About

Medical engineering is a new and exciting discipline of engineering spanning medicine, biomedical science and engineering. Medical engineers seek to improve human health through the development and design of equipment, devices, computer systems and software. A degree in medical engineering allows you to combine your interest in health and medicine with creativity and problem-solving to address health care challenges such as metabolic disorders, remote diagnostics and health care accessibility. We offer the only medical engineering degree in NSW, so our graduates are uniquely placed to improve lives both locally and around the world.

Areas of study

Major in medical biomechanics or medical devices.

You will also take courses in human pathophysiology, analog and digital communications, programming and computing, pharmacology, engineering design and neurobiology.

Elective pathways: All University of Newcastle Engineering (Honours) programs
facilitate the study of a wide range of elective pathways to customise our students' learning experience. These can deepen or broaden the knowledge base of the core program, depending on the student's desires and interests.

Career opportunities

Depending on your area of specialisation, you could work with biomechanical devices, surgical equipment, nanotechnology drugs and tests, prosthetic limbs, artificial organs, electrical and computing systems for radiotherapy, respiration or dialysis, digital medical records, and app-based health detection and diagnostics tools.

Practical experience

All University of Newcastle engineering students must complete 12 weeks of professional practice during their degree. complete 12 weeks of industrial experience during their degree. Through your work placement, you’ll build important professional networks and put your learning into practice.

Honours

All graduates will be awarded Bachelor of Medical Engineering (Honours), with graded honours awarded based on merit.

Admission criteria

Applicants with recent secondary education

Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Advanced (Band 5 or above). Applicants who achieve less than Band 5 may need additional study or assistance to successfully complete the mathematics requirement of the program.

Recommended studies: Mathematics Extension 1 or higher, any 2 units of science.

Applicants with higher education study

If you completed or partially completed higher education studies, your grade point average can be converted to a selection rank for admission purposes.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

If you completed or partially completed competency-based vocational education and training (such as TAFE, a private Registered Training Provider, or vocational studies undertaken in high school), this can be used to determine your eligibility for admission.

Studies completed at an AQF Level 4 (Cert IV) or higher provide Guaranteed Entry into many of our undergraduate programs.

Applicants with work and life experience

If you do not have an ATAR (or equivalent) or formal qualification, Newcastle University offers a range of pathways toward your dream degree. No matter what your age or experience, there is a place for you.
