Practical experience: Students accepted into a four-year B Commerce Co-op Scholarship Program undertake up to 18 months of practical experience in a sponsoring organisation.
For B Commerce/B Economics: This program combines the professional orientation of the B Economics degree with the additional majors offered in the B Commerce degree. Students complete one Economics major and one or two Commerce majors, enabling them to gain business knowledge in a number of areas.
For B Commerce/B Science: As listed for B Commerce plus anatomy, biochemistry, biological science, biotechnology, chemistry, ecology, environmental earth science, food science, genetics, geography, geology, marine sciences (marine biology, marine geology and physical oceanography), materials science, mathematics, medical microbiology and immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, pharmacology, physical oceanography, physics, physiology, psychology, safety, health and environment, spatial information systems, statistics, and toxicology.
For B Commerce/B Arts: As listed for B Commerce plus Asian studies, Chinese studies, criminology, development studies, English, environmental studies, European studies, film studies, French studies, Hispanic studies, history, history and philosophy of science, international relations, Japanese studies, Korean studies, linguistics, media, culture and technology, music, philosophy, politics, sociology and anthropology, and theatre and performance studies.
Professional recognition: Subject to courses studied and performance.
Accounting majors: CPA Australia, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA) and the National Institute of Accountants (NIA) recognise UNSW as an approved tertiary institution for the purpose of their membership qualifications.
Actuarial studies major: The Actuarial Studies major serves as a foundation for students who wish to enter the actuarial profession. Students must achieve the required academic standard in their Actuarial Studies courses to gain exemption from Part I of The Institute of Actuaries of Australia, the CT courses of The Institute of Actuaries (London) professional examinations and the VEE credit for the Society of Actuaries (USA).
Human resource management major: Completion of the human resource management major in a business degree successfully meets the criteria for accreditation by the Australian Human Resources Institute (AHRI).
Information systems major: The information systems major has been accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) for provisional membership at the Professional Level.
Marketing major: Students who complete a number of approved marketing courses may obtain the Certificate of Market Research from the Australian Market and Social Research Society (AMSRS). The marketing major meets the educational requirements for the Certified Practising Marketer (CPM) qualification from the Australian Marketing Institute.
Career opportunities: Examples include a wide range of careers and professions in the commercial, industrial and professional world, in the public service, and in teaching at both secondary and tertiary levels. Commerce/Economics graduates are well prepared for a broad range of careers in professional and business services. The combined Commerce/Science degree provides graduates with an in-depth understanding of science and technology, which are at the heart of many of today’s business opportunities. Commerce/Arts graduates are attractive to employers seeking business graduates with a humanities background in languages or with a social perspective.
Additional information: All students study a core program of accounting, business statistics, management and economics in their first semester, which provides a solid grounding in the fundamentals of business. In their second semester, students select four courses from a choice of six courses, providing them with the flexibility to study areas of interest before selecting their majors.
The combined degrees permit students to complete one or two Commerce majors as well as one or two majors from another faculty. Applicants who wish to undertake the B Commerce with Economics, Materials Science and Engineering, Science or Arts, should apply for 424000 and specify their preferred combination at the time of enrolment. B Commerce can also be combined with Engineering or Law. Applicants interested in Engineering/Commerce should apply for 425015. Applicants interested in Commerce/Law should apply for 426000.
