The University and TAFE NSW jointly offer an integrated industrial design program. The program is offered over four years with the first three years at TAFE NSW and the final year at the University of Newcastle. Students successfully completing the four-year program will receive the following awards:
– Advanced Diploma in Industrial Design (TAFE NSW course code 11057) or Advanced Diploma of Product Design and Innovation (TAFE NSW course code 19220)
– Bachelor of Industrial Design.
Graduate or prior study status: This course is not available to school leavers. Admission is open only to applicants who have completed the requirements for an Advanced Diploma in Industrial Design (TAFE NSW course code 11057) or an Advanced Diploma of Product Design and Innovation (TAFE NSW course code 19220) or an approved equivalent qualification from a recognised AQF provider.
Major studies: Industrial design innovation project, industrial design professional project. Minor studies: Computer imaging, ethics, sustainability.
Career opportunities: Examples include the design of cars, playground equipment, kitchen appliances, sporting equipment, furniture exhibition and point-of-purchase displays.
Additional information: This program draws on the intensive, hands-on TAFE environment for the thorough development of skills and then moves into the University’s culture of research-based innovation.
Entry into the Advanced Diploma component of this program is through TAFE NSW. The TAFE NSW application can be downloaded from www.tafensw.edu.au
Students apply through UAC for admission to the final year of the program at the University of Newcastle. Students are required to complete the University’s basic workshop skills and risk management course (ARBE 1500) before commencing the program.

Applicants should note that under the revised Australian Qualifications Framework some programs with Honours are four year programs available with direct entry and other programs are three year end-on Honours programs that require a 3 year Bachelor degree for admission.
