Recommended studies: Any two units of English plus Visual Arts.
Major studies: Secondary teaching, practical and theoretical studies in visual arts. Electives available in 2D, 3D, photomedia, video and visual communication; and drama or history (as a second teaching area) may be substituted for electives. Students may apply to undertake the special education specialisation in the fourth year of the program or honours (conditions apply).
Practical experience: Students will complete the equivalent of 90 days of professional experience in relevant school settings. This may involve placement in schools in locations outside the Newcastle area.
Honours: Students may elect to complete a 40-unit embedded Honours in Teaching program assuming they meet and maintain the eligibility requirements. Honours is currently under review and is subject to change.
Professional recognition: Graduates will be eligible for registration with the NSW Institute of Teachers.
Career opportunities: Examples include secondary school Visual Art teaching (Yrs 7–12) in the NSW Department of Education and Training, Catholic education and independent school systems; and in public and private school sectors both nationally and internationally. The degree program provides additional career prospects outside the teaching profession: such as art or design practitioner, art education officer in community venues, youth leaders, small business operative, gallery or museum educator.
Additional information: Students may elect to complete second teaching area in drama or history or special education.
