Recommended studies: Any two units of English plus Visual Arts.

Major studies: Secondary teaching, practical and theoretical studies in visual arts.

Electives available include: 2D, 3D, photo media, video and visual communication, Drama or History (as a second teaching area). Students may elect to undertake the Special Education specialisation in the fourth year of the program.

Practical experience: Students will complete the equivalent of 90 days of professional experience in relevant school settings. This may involve placement in schools in locations outside the Newcastle area.

Professional recognition: Graduates will be eligible for registration with the NSW Institute of Teachers.

Career opportunities: Examples include Secondary School Visual Art teaching (7 to 12) in the NSW Department of Education and Training, Catholic Education and Independent school systems; and in public and private school sectors both nationally and internationally. The double degree program provides additional career prospects outside the teaching profession such as: art or design practitioner, art education officer in community venues, youth leaders, small business operative, gallery or museum educator.

Additional information: Students may elect to complete second teaching area in Drama or History. Students may elect to complete a 40 unit embedded Honours in Teaching Program assuming they meet and maintain the eligibility requirements.

Primary teachers in NSW schools
Graduates intending to seek employment in NSW schools to teach at primary level must have achieved specific levels of study in English and mathematics at the NSW HSC (or equivalent) (for details of these requirements, read Special government policies. For students who do not meet the requirements when they commence the course, the University offers study concurrent with their degree to achieve the required level.
