Assumed knowledge: Any two units of English plus Mathematics or Physics. Applicants who have not studied Mathematics or Physics are encouraged to take a bridging course/s before the commencement of the university year. Read 'Bridging courses'.

Major studies: Radiation therapy.

Practical experience: Professional placement is integrated throughout the program and commences in first year. Students will complete around 25 weeks of professional practice in cancer care hospitals and private centres over the course of the degree. On professional placements students are mentored by qualified radiation therapists who support and assist their professional development. Students will undertake placements in various locations across NSW, in both public and private hospitals, and interstate and overseas placements are possible. All students will complete metropolitan, regional and rural placements. Travel, accommodation and related expenses for professional experience will be the responsibility of students.

Honours: B Health Science (Honours) is available to students who achieve the required grade point average.

Professional recognition: The degree is accredited by the Australian Institute of Radiography. A professional year is required after graduating.

Career opportunities: Examples include positions in public and private medical imaging and radiation oncology (cancer care) facilities. Medical radiation science professionals also work in management, research and higher education.

Radiation therapy is one of the key treatments used with patients diagnosed with cancer. Radiation therapists use 3D and 4D medical-imaging studies to map out diseased and normal tissues sites within the body, and employ advanced computer software to design the course of treatment and a range of advanced technologies to implement daily treatment over many weeks.

Additional information: This program requires students to participate in clinical placements in NSW Health facilities. Students will be subject to policies and procedures laid down by the NSW Ministry of Health, including policies around criminal record checking. These requirements may or may not include a WorkCover-approved first aid certificate, a National Police Certificate, a Prohibited Employment Declaration, NSW Health Code of Conduct Agreement as well as fulfilling any required immunisations in order to obtain a NSW Health Certificate of Compliance. Students are expected to comply with these requirements prior to undertaking clinical placements.

All students will be registered with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

The B Medical Radiation Science (Radiation Therapy) program and future professional practice is both mentally and physically demanding. Applicants who may be unsure of their ability to complete the program and work in the profession should contact the program officer prior to applying for the program.

All strands of the program require students to undertake extensive practical/clinical practice. While attending these centres, students are responsible for all travel, accommodation and related expenses. Applicants should be aware of this requirement when applying for entry to the B Medical Radiation Science (Radiation Therapy) program.

The award of this degree is dependent upon the student satisfactorily completing and passing all academic and practical components.
