Assumed knowledge: Mathematics (Band 5 or above) or equivalent. Study of one science-related subject would also be an advantage. Applicants who have achieved less than Band 5 or have not completed a science-related subject may be admitted but may need additional study and/or assistance to successfully complete the mathematics requirement of the program.
Recommended studies: HSC Mathematics Extension 1 or higher and any two units of science.
Major studies: Mining engineering.
Career opportunities: Examples include managing open cut and underground, mine management, drilling, blasting, planning and environmental planning.
Additional information: The mining transfer program offers you a sound understanding of mining and civil engineering concepts in preparation for a career as a professional mining engineer. Mining engineering graduates are highly sought after in both Australia and other parts of the world.
The first two years of this program are completed at the University of Newcastle, where you will study mechanics, geomechanics, engineering, computations, surveying and materials as well as mathematics and physics.
The final two years of the program are completed at the University of New South Wales or the University of Wollongong, where your studies will include underground mining, surface mining, blasting, geology, mine ventilation, mine economics, mine planning, mine water, environmental impact and regulations and safety. Students intending to transfer will need to apply for admission through UAC prior to the year seeking enrolment. Admission to both universities is competitive. Students are also advised to contact these universities and obtain additional information.
If you wish to pursue a career in open cut mining, you can do so with a B Engineering (Civil) degree from the University of Newcastle – refer to 480300.
For all engineering programs
Industrial experience: You will complete a minimum of 12 weeks' industrial experience during the program and have the opportunity to undertake an industry-related project in your final year of study.
Honours: Awarded on the basis of superior performance in the program.
Professional recognition: Engineering degree programs offered by the University of Newcastle are accredited by Engineers Australia, and through the Washington Accord by reciprocating bodies in the United Kingdom, USA and other countries. Software, Computer and Telecommunications Engineering programs are also accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS).

Employment: The employment rates of graduates from these degree programs are currently above national averages. The accreditation of these degrees ensures portability of qualifications.
