Major studies: Nursing

Practical experience: Students undertake six clinical placements over the three years in a variety of health settings. Students have the opportunity to choose a clinical nursing speciality focus in the final semester that is linked with industry in areas of workforce need, such as medical/surgical nursing, perioperative nursing, high-dependency nursing, oncology and palliative care, aged care, paediatrics, maternal and infant care, mental health, rehabilitation or community nursing. Students also undertake a community engagement elective which, in some instances, may allow the student to spend time in a clinical environment outside Sydney.

Honours: Graduates will be eligible for enrolment in the B Nursing Honours program.

Professional recognition: Graduates will be eligible to apply for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

Career opportunities: Examples include registered nurses in various urban and rural institutional settings such as public/private hospitals, nursing homes and clinics, and in mental health, general, paediatric and aged care nursing specialties. Other career opportunities available to graduates relate to health promotion and education in community, family, industrial and Aboriginal health facilities.

Additional information: The B Nursing (Practice Leadership) is a stream in the B Nursing course which is designed for students with outstanding academic ability and leadership potential. The course provides planned opportunities for mentoring by experienced clinicians and academics in nursing scholarship and practice leadership. The intake for this course will be limited to 25 students per annum.

Students must have a current CPR Certificate from an accredited source prior to undertaking clinical practice. A valid CPR certificate must be presented to the School of Nursing annually.
