Outstanding research is at the heart of everything The Australian National University (ANU) does.

Ranked as Australia’s leading university and one of the world’s great research universities by The Times Higher Education Supplement, the Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s Institute of Higher Education and Newsweek International, ANU offers students the chance to study alongside some of the world’s best academics. Exceptional teaching at ANU was recognised in the Australian Government’s Learning and Teaching Performance Fund for 2007, in which the University achieved top marks in every discipline group for which it was eligible.

Australia’s only national university, ANU was established by the Australian Parliament in 1946 to enhance the economic, social, cultural and intellectual development of the nation.

Located on a picturesque 145ha campus in the heart of Canberra, ANU is within easy walking distance of the retail and social facilities of the city centre, and close to many of the city’s sporting, recreational and cultural attractions. ANU has become a coveted destination for students, offering unique research-led courses and outstanding access to study resources.

The University provides state-of-the-art technology, including well-equipped lecture theatres, computing and laboratory facilities, five main libraries and a wide choice of accommodation options. Adjacent to the city centre, the campus offers excellent medical, academic skills and learning centres as well as a wide range of shops, restaurants and sporting facilities.

The University is focused on excellence in all it does and has forged close links with government, business and research institutions in Australia and abroad.

Admission requirements

Read Admission and selection for general information.

Admission requirements are the minimum qualifications you need before you can be selected for admission to a course of study.

When assessing your application ANU may take any or all of your qualifications or attempts at study into account.

Additional selection criteria
In addition to achieving the standard of performance required for admission, for certain courses you must also satisfy additional selection criteria. These criteria include portfolio, interview, audition, questionnaire or test and are taken into account either instead of, or in conjunction with, your UAI or equivalent.

Details of additional selection criteria and how applicants can meet these requirements are outlined in the course descriptions. For course descriptions, visit the course search on this website.

If you are undertaking your Year 12 studies offshore and are applying to a course that has additional selection criteria that you will find difficult to meet, contact the Admissions Office in the first instance.

Offers made to applicants who have a UAI (or equivalent) below the published cut-off

International applicants applying for admission on the basis of qualifications other than those listed above must apply directly to the University, not through UAC International. For details visit http://students.anu.edu.au/apply_online.asp.

Students under 18 years of age

Before you are granted a student visa, the Australian Government must be satisfied that you have appropriate accommodation, support and general welfare arrangements in place for the period that you will be under 18 years of age while in Australia.

ANU does not accept responsibility for welfare arrangements for international students who are under 18 years of age unless you turn 18 within the first six weeks of semester. For more information on accommodation, support and general welfare arrangements or any restrictions that may apply, visit http://info.anu.edu.au/StudyAt/International_Office/student_life/Under18.asp

Tuition fees

For information about tuition fees visit the course search.

International students are required to pay full tuition fees (International Student Fees - ISF) and are not subsidised by the Australian Government.

The 2009 ISF levels have not yet been set, but for an indication of fee levels, check the 2008 amounts at www.anu.edu.au/sas/fees/ISF_2008.pdf.

Details on when and how to pay fees can be found at www.anu.edu.au/sas/fees/how_to_pay_fees/.

Note: If you are offered a place at ANU you will be required to pay a deposit before we will issue you an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) for use in your student visa application process.

The deposit consists of A$5 000 in tuition fees, plus the applicable Overseas Student Health Cover insurance premium (in 2008 this was either A$370 for a single person or A$740 for a family).

Fees policy
For all ANU fees-related information visit www.anu.edu.au/sas/fees/.
