Important dates for 2009

The academic year at ANU is divided into two main sessions:
• Semester 1 (between February and June)
• Semester 2 (between July and November).

There is also an optional summer session (January and early February) when a limited range of subjects is offered to later year students only.

Admission requirements

Admission requirements are the minimum qualifications you need before you can be selected for admission to a course of study.

As an international student attempting one of the following qualifications, you will apply for admission through UAC International and will generally be selected on the basis of your performance in these studies (that is, your UAI or equivalent):
• an Australian Year 12 qualification (either offshore or in Australia)
• an International Baccalaureate in Australia
• a New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement Level 3.

When assessing your application ANU may take any or all of your qualifications or attempts at study into account.

Additional selection criteria
In addition to achieving the standard of performance required for admission, for certain courses you must also satisfy additional selection criteria. These criteria include portfolio, interview, audition, questionnaire or test and are taken into account either instead of, or in conjunction with, your UAI or equivalent.

If you are undertaking your Year 12 studies offshore and are applying to a course that has additional selection criteria that you will find difficult to meet, contact the Admissions Office in the first instance.

Offers made to applicants who have a UAI (or equivalent) below the published cut-off

ANU has a number of alternative pathways for admission, which may allow applicants to receive an offer to a course even though they have a UAI or equivalent below the published cut-off. They are:
• strong performance in relevant Year 12 subjects - for a limited number of programs (refer to individual course descriptions in the course search for details)
• consideration on the basis of a statement provided by the applicant - Law only.

Students under 18 years of age

Before you are granted a student visa, the Australian Government must be satisfied that you have appropriate accommodation, support and general welfare arrangements in place for the period that you will be under 18 years of age while in Australia.

ANU does not accept responsibility for welfare arrangements for international students who are under 18 years of age unless you turn 18 within the first six weeks of semester. Tuition fees

International students are required to pay full tuition fees (International Student Fees - ISF) and are not subsidised by the Australian Government.

The 2009 ISF levels have not yet been set, but for an indication of fee levels, check the 2008 amounts at www.anu.edu.au/sas/fees/ISF_2008.pdf.

Note: If you are offered a place at ANU you will be required to pay a deposit before we will issue you an electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) for use in your student visa application process.

The deposit consists of A$5 000 in tuition fees, plus the applicable Overseas Student Health Cover insurance premium (in 2008 this was either A$370 for a single person or A$740 for a family).

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC)

ANU's preferred provider of OSHC is OSHC Worldcare. However, you may choose whichever OSHC provider that is best suited to your needs. Acceptance

To accept your offer of admission, go to www.anu.edu.au/sas/admission/accept_international/ and follow the instructions.

Orientation

Orientation is designed to give you the best start to your new life at ANU and in Canberra. The program will give you opportunities to meet other new students, understand the enrolment and other university administration process, attend welcome BBQs, campus tours and library discovery sessions, and become familiar with Canberra.

Enrolment

ANU conducts face-to-face enrolment sessions over a number of days before classes commence. You will be sent enrolment instructions once you have accepted your offer. You will also receive advice on how to complete your enrolment during your orientation sessions.

ANU provides comprehensive library services via five main libraries. The campus is very well networked and a wide variety of software applications are available on PC and Macintosh platforms in the libraries, teaching rooms and student residences. Many areas of the campus are wireless enabled.

Transport

Canberra is well serviced by public bus services and bike paths. Parking on campus is limited and generally requires a permit. ANU Security provides a free bus around campus and into Civic after 5pm during Semester.
