Choosing courses

How many courses can I include?

  • Include up to six courses.
  • If you are interested in only one course, then include only that course.
  • Remember: You can only include the courses listed in the course search.

Does the order in which I list my courses matter?

Yes. Institutions use a preference-based offer system. This means that if you have listed more than one course for an institution, your courses for that institution will be considered in the order in which you have listed them. So, for each institution that you include in your application, you may receive only one offer in each offer run.

However, each institution will consider your application separately. This means that if you include more than one institution in your application, you may receive more than one offer in each offer run.

Example:
Applicant A lists six courses, all for the University of Western Sydney. In each offer run, Applicant A may receive only one offer – to the highest course listed for which Applicant A is eligible and competitive enough.

Applicant B lists six courses, three for Southern Cross University and three for the University of New England. In each offer run, Applicant B may receive two offers – one to the highest course listed at Southern Cross University for which Applicant B is eligible and competitive enough and one to the highest course listed at the University of New England for which Applicant B is eligible and competitive enough.

For more information read offers.

What should I remember when entering my courses?

When considering your courses think about what you would really like to do, balanced by a realistic appraisal of courses to which you may qualify for admission.

In the course search some institutions show the UAI or equivalent cut-offs required by international Year 12 applicants for entry into each course in 2008; others show projected cut-offs for 2009. Use these UAI cut-offs as a guide when considering your courses. Remember that the cut-offs indicate the lowest UAI or equivalent accepted for entry into the course - they do not represent the average ability of the students accepted for the course.

The UAI cut-offs for entry in 2008 will not be known until offers are made.

Authorising someone to contact UAC

All information obtained by UAC from your application is confidential. To protect your privacy you need to tell us if there is someone you would like to authorise to contact UAC regarding your application in addition to yourself.

Note: This person can be a different person or the same person as the agent/representative who may be helping you with your application and visa formalities. For more information about agents, read 'Agent-assisted applications' below.

You and the person you are authorising must:
  • complete the appropriate section in the International Apply-By-Web or
  • submit a letter of authority to UAC.
The letter of authority must include:
  • the printed full name of the person you are authorising
  • the signature of the person you are authorising
  • your signature
  • your UAC application number.

Note: This authorisation only applies to the UAC application process. It does NOT authorise someone to accept an offer on your behalf. For details on how to authorise someone to accept an offer on your behalf, contact the relevant institution.

If you have a disability

Institutions can provide services and assessment adjustments for students who have disabilities and ongoing illnesses which have an impact on their studies. Institutions use the term 'disability' to include a wide range of illnesses as well as physical, sensory, learning and psychiatric disabilities.

Disability services staff at each institution can provide advice and information when you are preparing for university study. The online resource Get Ready for Uni www.uws.edu.au/ndco/getready is highly recommended for anyone with a disability who is considering university study.

If you have a disability or ongoing illness that may disadvantage you during your studies, you can include this information in your International Apply-By-Web application. If you include on your International Apply-By-Web application that you have a disability, you will be asked to print the disability questionnaire, complete it and return it to UAC.

A copy of your questionnaire will be sent to the disability services staff at the institution to which you are made an offer. Your questionnaire will assist the institution to meet your education needs. The questionnaire is confidential and will be seen only by disability services staff.

You are encouraged to contact the Disability Officers at the institutions to which you have applied to discuss your education needs. While the support services and physical access may differ from institution to institution, the services generally offered include: note takers, personal readers, examination provisions, assistance in the library, parking for holders of RTA mobility access permits, learning assistance, alternative assessment methods, and provision of academic material in alternative formats.

Contact details for institutions' Disability Officers can be downloaded. For more information about the services provided, read the institutions' general information.
