Assumed knowledge: Graduates intending to seek employment in NSW schools to teach at secondary level must have achieved specific levels of study in English at the NSW HSC (or equivalent) (for details of these arrangements, read 'Special government policies'). For students who do not meet the requirements when they commence the course, the University offers study concurrent with their degree to achieve the required level.

Major studies: For 331103: Biology, chemistry, curriculum studies, educational studies, geology, professional experience. For 331104 and 331156: Cultural studies, curriculum studies in English and human society, English, history or geography, professional experience. For 331105: Composition, music curriculum studies, music performance, music production, professional experience. For 331106: Drug and alcohol education, exercise science, movement studies, personal development, health and physical curriculum studies, professional experience. For 331107: Ceramics, digital art, painting, photography, printmaking, professional experience, sculpture, visual art, visual art curriculum studies.

Practical experience: Students complete a program of practical in-school teaching experiences, culminating in a seven-week in-school internship to demonstrate their independent professional capabilities as secondary school teachers.

Professional recognition: Endorsed by the NSW Institute of Teachers. Normally, teacher education qualifications endorsed in NSW are recognised nationally and internationally, but students need to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities in other states and territories regarding accreditation standards.

Career opportunities: Examples include secondary school teachers in the following subjects: For 331103: biology, science. For 331104: geography, English, history, cultural studies. For 331105: music. For 331106: personal development, health and physical education. For 331107: visual arts.

Additional information: The combined degrees are designed to ensure that graduates have a strong foundation of knowledge both in teaching subjects for the secondary school curriculum and in the professional practice of teaching.
