Frequently asked questions – Offers

Offers

Does UAC or the institution decide who is made an offer to a course?

Applications for each course are ranked in order of merit, with the highest considered first. You can choose up to nine course preferences.

For information on offer rounds read Offers information. Remember that if you receive an offer you must accept it by the date specified or you may lose your offer.

Preferences are considered in the order in which you have listed them on your application. If there is no place available in the course listed as your first preference, your second preference will be considered and so on until an offer can be made or you have no more preferences.

How will I know if my application is successful?

How many offers is it possible to receive in each offer round?

You can only receive one offer in each offer round. The majority of offers are made in the Main Round. Institutions only make offers in the Late and Final rounds if there are vacancies.

Should I accept my offer? I might receive another offer in the next round

If you receive an offer in one round, don't assume that you will receive another offer in a subsequent round. If you don't accept your offer and you don't receive an offer in a subsequent round, you may miss out on tertiary study in 2009.

Accepting an offer does not stop you from being considered in subsequent offer rounds unless it is your first preference (see below). You must accept your offer by the date indicated in your offer material otherwise you may lose your offer.

Do I need to change my preferences between offer rounds?

No, not unless you have changed your mind about what you wish to study. If you receive an offer to your first preference in one offer round you will not be considered for your lower preferences in subsequent offer rounds unless you change your preferences.

If you receive an offer to a lower preference in an offer round, you will automatically be considered for your higher preference/s in subsequent rounds

Do cut-offs remain the same for the Main, Late and Final rounds?

The cut-off for a course in the Late and Final rounds could be greater than, equal to, or less than, the cut-off in the Main Round depending on the number of places available after Main Round acceptances.

If I don't receive an offer, how can I find out why I was unsuccessful?

You will be sent a notice telling you why your application was unsuccessful.

You will need to speak to the admissions office at the institution, and ask why you were not made an offer and what your study options are. The institutions, not UAC, decide who will receive offers to courses based on the preferences expressed on your UAC application.

If I receive an offer, can I defer my enrolment?

Some institutions allow you to defer in some courses; others don't. Refer to table 6 – deferment policies.
