Additional information: The B Business and Commerce is a broadly based, multidiscipline course offering flexibility and choice through a range of 19 different key programs, each of which reflects a particular business discipline. Students may select any key programs offered on their home campus. The course seeks to equip all students with a good understanding of basic business issues complemented by a high level of knowledge relevant to a specific business discipline as applied in a global environment. Each specific business discipline has a capstone unit involving real life cases or simulations; this means that graduates from the course will be considered 'business ready' in terms of dealing with real world business issues and problems and generating real world business solutions. In addition to the key programs, students will be able to complete (and will be required to do so in the management and enterprise management key programs) either a major or a sub-major in another business area. Students can select units, majors or sub-majors from most disciplines in the University. Students may select a major within the first year of study or on completion of a year of study.

Accounting (Blacktown, Campbelltown and Parramatta*)

Major studies: Accounting, business.

Minor studies: Assurance services, auditing, financial accounting, financial management, insolvency, management accounting, public practice, taxation.

Honours: Available as an additional year (or part-time eqv) to meritorious students.

Professional recognition: This program is accredited with both the CPA Australia and The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia (ICAA). Accreditation with CPA Australia means that graduates of this key program (with selection of appropriate electives) will be eligible for entry into the CPA professional program leading to becoming a Certified Practising Accountant. Accreditation with ICAA means that graduates of this key program (with selection of appropriate electives) will be eligible for entry to the CA program leading to becoming a chartered accountant.

Career opportunities: Examples include financial and management accounting in companies, government bodies, and not-for-profit organisations. Other opportunities include accounting systems design, business advising, financial advising, financial controllership, public practice, auditing, assurance services, and consulting.

Additional information: Emphasis is placed on the development of technical and personal skills needed to provide advice as business and financial professionals. A completed TAFE award or other recognised/approved higher education studies may allow you to gain advanced standing for selected units.

Applied Economics (Campbelltown, Parramatta)

Major studies: Economics.

Minor studies: Economic analysis and policy, urban and regional economic development, industry economics and markets, political and managerial economics.

Honours: Available as an additional year (or part-time eqv) to meritorious students.

Career opportunities: Examples include economist, economic adviser, cost-benefit analyst, economic forecaster, market analyst and economic policy analyst in the private sector (such as banking and insurance companies) or in the public sector.

Additional information: This key program puts a strong emphasis on the application of microeconomic and macroeconomic theory within both an Australian and a global context. The course also offers considerable flexibility as students may elect to study a range of business-related disciplines as electives within the course. Applied Finance (Campbelltown, Parramatta)

Major studies: Banking, finance, financial management, financial markets, financial services, investment management.

Honours: Available as an additional year (or part-time eqv) to meritorious students.

Professional recognition: Students enrolled in the Applied Finance key program who are also currently employed in the financial services industry are eligible for associate membership with the Financial Services Institute of Australasia FINSIA. All other students currently enrolled in the Applied Finance key program are eligible for affiliate membership with FINSIA (no postnominals apply).

Career opportunities: Examples include positions in corporate finance, money and capital markets, financial services management, merchant banking and treasury. You also have the opportunity to work as an equity analyst and trader, credit analyst, investment adviser, or portfolio manager.

Financial Mathematics (Parramatta)

Major studies: Finance, mathematics, statistics.

Minor studies: Accounting, economics.

Career opportunities: Examples include employment in areas where mathematical models are used, and in the gathering and analysis of data, particularly in the finance industry and government departments, and more generally in positions where quantitative and analytical skills are required. Employment is available in the financial, banking, superannuation and insurance sectors, including the management of large portfolios, pricing and hedging of financial instruments and modelling of financial markets, as well as in more general areas of financial management or mathematical modelling.

Additional information: You will gain a good grounding in the theory and applications of mathematical and statistical techniques as they are used in business and the finance industry. This program will provide you with the skills to examine a range of aspects within the Australian banking and finance systems. These will include management of portfolios, pricing and hedging of financial instruments and modelling of financial markets. Career opportunities: Examples include roles in hospitality, retail, manufacturing, distribution, transport and other service industries. Initial roles may also be in customer service, purchasing, planning, inventory management, product development, logistics, quality management, and production management. Additional information: Operations and supply chain management within organisations is essential to organisations across a wide range of industry sectors. This key program looks at operations and supply chain management through a local and global perspective. Career opportunities: Examples include training and development management, organisational change management, management of skills and career development in public and private sector organisations, workforce planning for both organisational and regional development in public and private organisations.

Additional information: This program recognises that staff and skill shortages following the retirement of the population bulge immediately after World War II, together with the movement of business into the west of Sydney, have provided an environment of organisational change and the need to manage organisational development. As a result, there is a great demand for students completing this key program. Employment opportunities include positions such as training and development manager, employee relations manager, human resources manager, director of employment services, industrial relations officer and industrial advocate.

The major is also suitable for line managers who need employment relations competencies to perform their general management responsibilities.
