Recommended studies: Ancient History, Dance, Drama, Economics, English Advanced, Legal Studies, Modern History, Music 2 or AMEB (7th Grade Practical and 6th Grade Theory or Musicianship).

Assumed knowledge: For B Music/B Science: Mathematics and Chemistry plus one or more of Biology, Earth and Environmental Science, Physics, HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (depending on chosen area of study).

Additional selection criteria: If you are applying for admission to 422004 B Music, 422004 B Music/B Arts, or 422005 B Music/B Education, you must complete an audition. Apply for an audition online at http://empa.arts.unsw.edu.au between June and October 2008. Auditions will be scheduled at the Kensington campus in late November. You may, however, request an early audition. These will be held during the first week of the September school vacation.

A satisfactory audition is a requirement for admission, together with an acceptable level of attainment in Year 12 studies or equivalent. Notify the School immediately on (02) 9385 4856 if you do not receive notification of your audition time by 7 November 2008. If you do not attend at the specified time, your application cannot be considered.

Major studies: For Music: Composition, jazz studies, musicology, performance. For Arts: Asian studies, Chinese studies, criminology, development studies, economics, English, environmental studies, European studies, film studies, French studies, geography, Hispanic studies, history, history and philosophy of science, human resource management, international business, international relations, Japanese studies, Korean studies, linguistics, media and culture, music, philosophy, politics, psychology, sociology and anthropology, theatre and performance studies. For Science: Anatomy, biochemistry, biological science, biotechnology, chemistry, ecology, environmental earth science, food science and nutrition, genetics, geography, geology, history and philosophy of science, marine science (marine biology, marine geology, physical oceanography), materials science, mathematics, medical microbiology and immunology, microbiology, molecular biology, pharmacology, philosophy, physical oceanography, physics, physiology, psychology, safety health and environment, spatial information systems, statistics, toxicology, vision science.

Career opportunities: Examples include work in music production, arts administration, journalism, broadcasting, recording, teaching, sound archiving, concert planning, film soundtracks, solo or group performance. For B Music/B Science: Acoustics and psycho-acoustics, administration, audio engineering, broadcasting, composition, journalism, music performance, music programming, private teaching.

Honours: For B Music/B Science: Honours is available in Music or Science as an additional year of study.

Additional information: Core studies in performance, musicology and musicianship and electives including composition, jazz, music technology, arranging, ethnomusicology, music history and analysis together with contextual studies and general education provide a well-rounded musical education with specialisation in students' areas of professional interest. With a comparable music entry standard, you may apply for a place in 422000 B Arts with a view to majoring in music. An audition is not required for entry to B Arts.

For B Music/B Science: The combined B Music/B Science degree program enables students to complete a major sequence from those available in Science while studying for a specialist music degree involving instrumental performance and/or composition. All B Music students must take part in at least two of the performance ensembles offered by the School, one of which must be a major performing ensemble such as the orchestra.
