Course prerequisites: ACT: Chemistry to the level of at least a minor. NSW: Chemistry or equivalent; or successful completion of a tertiary chemistry bridging course.

Major studies: This program will give students a solid grounding in all aspects of genetics, including the traditional areas of Mendelian, population, and evolutionary genetics; more recent developments in molecular and medical genetics; and bioinformatics.

Honours: Available as an additional year, subject to progress requirements.

Career opportunities: Examples include careers in medical research, conservation biology and policy, forensic science, genetic counselling, biotechnology.

Additional information: Students must maintain a credit average (65 per cent) for prescribed courses to remain in this program.

Bonus points: Recent school leavers with good school results in Mathematics or Physics or Chemistry may be awarded special consideration resulting in up to five bonus points. Mature-age applicants with demonstrated academic capacity in science may be awarded special consideration resulting in up to three bonus points.
